18 March 2001 – The Moroccan athlete Hasna Benhassi, the 1500 metre gold medallist in Lisbon, suffered minor injuries in a traffic accident in Rabat, according to information released by the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation.

The bonnet of Benhassi’s car apparently opened whilst she was driving from Rabat to Méknès to participate in the national winter championships.

The 22-year-old suffered minor abrasions to her face, as did Malika Mejdoub, who often acts as pacemaker for Benhassi in training. Benhassi’s husband who was also in the car was uninjured.

The three were being kept under observation at a hospital in Rabat, but doctors said that there was no major cause for concern.
