Some fine throwing and a good men’s Pole Vault highlighted the 11th Anhalt Meeting in Dessau on Tuesday (02). Mark Frank took the Javelin with 83.86m while Nadine Kleinert won the Shot Put with 19.80m.
Frank improved his national season’s best to 83.86m and with this for the first time officially beat the national qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin (15th to 23rd August). He had thrown 81.04m before in Rostock, but that was at an event which was not labelled as a qualifying meeting. Since German javelin throwers have to beat the standard twice Frank will have to surpass 81.00m once more to be able to make the national team for Berlin.
“With today’s result I should have opened some doors regarding my next competitions. So hopefully I can now compete at the DKB ISTAF in Berlin,” Frank told Peter Grau of ‘leichtathletik.de’. On 14th June the DKB ISTAF will be the opening meeting of the ÅF Golden League. In Dessau Frank was just little over one metre short of his four-year-old personal best of 84.88m. He now ranks number three in the 2009 world lists. His winning throw was however the only one beyond the 80m mark with three attempts invalid. Ainars Kovals of Latvia was second with 81.62m.
Britain’s Riki Fifton took the 100m in 10.25 seconds and also clocked the fastest 200m time of the day, winning the B-Race with 20.58. Gregory Sedoc (Netherlands) took the 110m Hurdles with 13.51 while Abdalaati Iguider (Morocco) won the 1500m in 3:36.86. Sergey Kucheryanu who beat the Germans in the Pole Vault. The Russian was the only one who cleared 5.70m. Tim Lobinger and Alexander Straub shared second place with 5.60m while Fabian Schulze was fourth with the same height. Schulze had been lucky to escape unhurt when his pole broke during another attempt.
Kleinert confirmed her fine spring form in Dessau. She took the Shot Put and improved her season’s best to 19.80m. A week earlier she had thrown 19.50m in Halle. Denise Hinrichs was second with 19.35m while Petra Lammert took third (18.68m). All three have now achieved the German qualifying standard for Berlin twice.
In contrast to the shot putters Franka Dietzsch still struggles in the Discus. “I am really annoyed that I don’t do better,” the reigning World Champion said. The 41-year-old had to be content with 56.53m and a fifth place in Dessau. Poland’s Wioleta Potepa won the competition with 63.24m.
While Russia’s Anna Piatykh took the Triple Jump with 14.17m Germany’s Katja Demut improved her personal best to 14.12m for second place.
