Oumar Ba for the IAAF
20 February 2002 – Dakar, Senegal – The first outdoor competition
for the attendees of the International Athletics Centre of Dakar (CIAD) took place last
Saturday and produced some interesting performances, with the 400 metres producing the
best results.
Short sprint specialist Oumar Loum had a shot at the 400 metres and recorded a 48.4 (manual timing) ahead of Papa Serigne Diène (48.9), who is an habitué of the one lap event.
Other CIAD athletes who distinguished themselves during Saturday’s meeting included Aida Diop (53.8 for the 400m), who was narrowly beaten by Cameroonian Hortense Bewouda (53.5). The Senegalese, who holds the national record for 200 metres, preferred to compete in the 400 to improve her resistance.
Without a doubt, it was Ghana’s Vida Anim who made the biggest impression on the track, achieving 11 seconds flat in the 100 metres ahead of Ubifuro Tobin-West (11.2).
For the men, the laurels went to Burkina Faso’s Idrissa Sanon with a time of 10.3 narrowly defeating Kowlessur (10.4).
The 100 metre hurdles were dominated by Madagascans Berlioz Randriamihaja (13.6) and Rosa Rakotozafy (13.8).
400m World Champion Amy Mbacké Thiam should compete for the first time this season at the next meeting.
