8 September 2000 – One of Nigeria’s top medal hopes in Sydney, 100m hurdles specialist Glory Alozie, silver medallist in Seville last year, was today mourning the loss of her fiancé, the Nigerian 400m runner Hyginus Anugo.

Anugo was reportedly killed while crossing the road to catch a bus late on Thursday evening in a suburb of Sydney.

Alozie, who is currently in Japan for the Yokohama permit meet on Saturday, was said to be distraught at the death of 22-year old Anugo, who was a reservist for the Nigerian 4x400m relay squad.

Anugo had previously competed in Sydney at the 6th IAAF World Junior Championships in 1996, where he placed fifth in the fifth heat of the 400m with a time of 48.60.
