Fermin Cacho voted Spain's Athlete of the Century

22 January 2000MadridBarcelona Olympic 1500m gold medallist Fermin Cacho was named Spain's Athlete of the Century.

Cacho was the clear winner of a poll jointly organised by the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Spanish Athletics Federation.

After winning the 1988 world junior 1500 bronze medal he went on to become Spain's first Olympic gold medallist on the track when he was a surprise winner of the 1500m in 1992.

Two years later Cacho took the European title over the metric mile in Helsinki.

Abel Anton and Cuban-born Niurka Montalvo, Spain's two gold medallists at the world championships in Seville, were named Spanish Athletes of 1999. Montalvo won the women's long jump and Anton the men's marathon.
