El Guerrouj, Fredericks and Zelezny take up their seats on IOC Athletes’ Commission

The IOC Athletes’ Commission met on Tuesday 23 November for the first time with its new composition of members. Under the chairmanship of IAAF Council member Sergey Bubka, the Commission met in Lausanne.

Three of the four new members, who were elected by their peers this summer in Athens are from the sport of Athletics, Hicham El Guerrouj, Frank Fredericks and Jan Zelezny. As well as attending the meeting they took the opportunity to visit the IOC and Olympic Museum the previous day for talks on their obligations and responsibilities as Commission members and new IOC members.

The Commission can also count on the experience of a new representative from the World Olympians Association (WOA): Charmaine Crooks, a member of the Canadian women’s 400 x 400m team which won the silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984.

HSH Prince Albert of Monaco is the Vice-Chairman of the Athletes' Commission which was created on 27 October 1981, as a link between active athletes and the International Olympic Committee.
