11 March 2008MonteCarloIt is with deep regret that the IAAF has learnt of the passing of Dr. Brahim Baba (ALG), a respected member of the IAAF Medical & Anti-Doping Commission. Dr. Baba (51) died from a suspected heart attack this morning, 11 March, in his home town of Algiers.
Dr. Baba was first a member of the IAAF Medical Committee in 1995 and continued until this day as part of the IAAF Medical & Anti-Doping Commission. Heavily involved in the sport of athletics, Dr. Baba was also the Chairman of the Medical and Anti-Doping Commission for the African Athletic Confederation. He was well known and respected amongst the elite athletes of his region and worked hard to promote medical and anti-doping issues in both Algeria and Africa as a whole.
Much of his time was spent volunteering his services conducting courses in the IAAF Regional Development Centers and acting as IAAF Medical & Anti-Doping Delegate at many of the large African competitions. His work and knowledge in Africa and the Arabic speaking countries will be sorely missed by the IAAF.
Dr. Baba who was a sports medicine specialist, had a private practice in Algeria and was also the President of the International Mesotherapy Society. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
