Anju leaps to glory

5 June 2001 - Thiruvananthapuram, India -  Anju B. George (nee Markose) assured her place as the 'Superwoman' of Indian athletics by leaping to a new National Record 6.74m here yesterday.

The 24-years old Anju, a Chennai Customs employee, took advantage of the slightly downhill runway at University Stadium with a tail wind of 1.3m/s made a big leap in her first try and landed on the pit to a record distance, which was just 1 cm shorter than the "A" standard for the ensuing World Championship at Edmonton.

Anju, forced to skip the Sydney Olympic Games due to ankle injury last year, however made the "B" grade of 6.65m and is confident of making the national team this time.

Another noteworthy result came from Women's 400m race in which Jincy Philip edged Sydney Olympic semi-finalist K.M. Beenamol to win the race at 54.04 secs.
