6 September 2000 Rabat The Moroccan athlete Abdeslam Radi, silver medallist in the marathon at the Rome Olympics in 1960 and winner of the Nations Cross at Hamilton park (Scotland) the same year was admitted to the Moulay Abdellah oncology hospital in Rabat a few days ago.
Radi, 77, the first Arab athlete to win an Olympic medal is currently undergoing test and analysis for suspected cancer of the liver.
A number of leading Moroccan athletes, led by 1500m World Champion Hicham El Guerrouj, visited Abdeslam Radi in hospital to wish him well and give him their support before embarking for Sydney on Tuesday.
In addition to his Olympic silver medal and victory in the Nations Cross, Radi won a number of major international competitions including the 1959 ten mile race in London.
