The 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics was awarded to Berlin (GER) by the IAAF Council at its meeting in December 2004 in Helsinki. The dates of 15 – 23 August 2009 were approved during the Council Meeting in Doha in April 2005.
Berlin became, once again, the capital of Germany in 1990 at the time of the reunification. It lies on the flatlands of the North German Plain at the confluence of several rivers.
The Berlin Olympic Stadium was originally built to host the 1936 Olympic Games. It was totally renovated with a new blue track in 2004 at a cost of 240 Million Euros financed by the city. The seated area for spectators has 74,300 seats of which 73,500 seats are covered.
The stadium is the annual home of the ISTAF meeting, which is part of the IAAF Golden League.
The host broadcaster will be ARD/ZDF Sport Coordination (named “BERTA”).
In its application form, the LOC presented a balanced budget of 49 888 000 USD (44 Million Euros).
