World Athlete of the Year 2017 longlist – sprints and hurdles

With just six days to go before voting for the 2017 World Athletes of the Year concludes, here’s another look at this year's men’s and women’s longlist candidates, focusing today on those who excelled in the sprints and hurdles.

Omar McLeod (JAM) continued his reign as the world's top sprint hurdler, winning six of seven finals including the world 110m hurdles title. The world leader with his 12.90 national record in June, McLeod produced the season's three fastest performances, and six of the best eight.

Sally Pearson (AUS) capped a return from injury by winning a second world 100m hurdles title and capping the season as IAAF Diamond League champion. She won six of 12 100m hurdles finals and was the third fastest hurdler in the world with a 12.48 season's best.

Wayde van Niekerk (RSA) won two medals at the IAAF World Championships London 2017, a second successive gold at 400m and silver at 200m. He was the world leader in the 400m at 43.62, the second fastest in the world at 200m with a 19.84 national record, and set a 30.81 world best at 300m to break a mark which had stood for 17 years.

Voting procedure for 2017 World Athletes of the Year

A three-way voting process will determine the finalists.

The IAAF Council and the IAAF Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the IAAF's social media platforms. Individual graphics for each nominee have been posted on Facebook and Twitter; a 'like' on Facebook or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.

The IAAF Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the IAAF Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25% of the final result.

Voting closes on 16 October. At the conclusion of the voting process, three men and three women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.

The male and female World Athletes of the Year will be announced live on stage at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2017 in Monaco on Friday 24 November.
