Olympic high jump champion Ruth Beitia of Spain received the International Fair Play award from The International Fair Play Committee (CIFP), with the support of the IAAF, at a ceremony in London on Sunday (13).
Beitia was recognised for her efforts to console Alessia Trost of Italy after she failed to qualify for the final in the women's high jump at the IAAF World Championships London 2017. It was an emotional moment for the 24-year-old Trost, whose mother and former coach passed away in the last year.
The presentation took place at The London Stadium after the final session of the IAAF World Championships London 2017. The award was presented by IAAF President Sebastian Coe.
"I would like to thank the IAAF and its President Sebastian Coe, as well as all the members who have chosen me for the Fair Play award. I feel very proud, very happy," said Beitia, a three-time European champion who finished 12th today in her eighth appearance at an IAAF World Championships.
"I have devoted 32 years to this sport and it has shown me that it creates values. On the track you just have to be the same person that you truly are. What I did here, I would do it over and over again. Anytime I can assist any of my team-mates I am there for them."
Established in 1963 by UNESCO and a number of international sports governing bodies, the CIFP promotes and honours memorable acts and significant careers that embody the spirit of fair play. The CIFP, in conjunction with the IAAF, has honoured track and field athletes at each edition of the IAAF World Championships since 2003. Past winners have included Jonathan Edwards, Mike Powell and Koji Murofushi.
Le Trophée du fair-play décerné à Ruth Beitia
La championne olympique espagnole de saut en hauteur Ruth Beitia a reçu le Trophée international du fair-play décerné par le Comité international pour le fair-play, avec le soutien de l’IAAF.
Ruth Beitia a été récompensée pour avoir tenté de consoler l’Italienne Alessia Trost, éliminée lors du concours de qualification pour la finale du saut en hauteur féminin. L’Italienne, âgée de 24 ans, a vécu un moment particulièrement émouvant puisqu’elle a perdu sa mère et son ancien entraîneur au cours des douze derniers mois.
La cérémonie de présentation du trophée s’est déroulée au stade de Londres au terme de la dernière session des Championnats du Monde de l’IAAF, Londres 2017. Le prix a été remis par le président de l’IAAF, Sebastian Coe.
« J’aimerais remercier l’IAAF et son président Sebastian Coe, ainsi que tous les membres qui m’ont choisie pour ce prix du fair-play. Je suis très fière, très heureuse, a déclaré Ruth Beitia, triple championne d’Europe, qui a terminé douzième aujourd’hui pour ce qui était sa huitième participation à des Championnats du Monde de l’IAAF.
« J’ai consacré 32 années de ma vie à ce sport, et il m’a démontré qu’il crée des valeurs. Sur la piste, il vous faut être la personne que vous êtes vraiment. Ce que j’ai fait ici, je le referais à chaque fois sans hésiter. Dès que je peux porter assistance à l’un de mes pairs, je n’hésite jamais. »

Parmi les lauréats du passé, on peut citer notamment Jonathan Edwards, Mike Powell et Koji Murofushi.
