Imre Matrahazi Sr died on 20 March 2013 after a serious illness. He was an emblematic, prominent figure of Hungarian athletics, a much respected competition organiser and technical official.
Imre Matrahazi Sr (DOB 23 July 1928) was a mechanical engineer by profession, a member of the board of the Hungarian Federation for 27 years, chair of the federation’s technical committee. He took part in the organisation in Hungary of two IAAF World Indoor Championships, a World Cross Country Championships and a World Youth Championships as well as several European Athletics competitions including two European Championships.
A member of IAAF’s International Technical Official (ITO) Panel in the 90s, he officiated at the 1993 World Indoor Championships in Toronto, as well as the 1994 (Lisbon) and the 1996 (Sydney) World Junior Championships. He received the European Athletics Golden Pin and, in 1999, the IAAF Veteran Pin.
The IAAF offers its deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends with special thoughts and best wishes for his son Imre Jr an IAAF staff member who is the technical manager for the IAAF competitions department.
