IAAF Research Projects

The IAAF, with help from the IAF (International Athletics Foundation), has in the past initiated several scientific projects in the areas of biomechanics, coaching and development. With the completion of the projects, a final report was produced, as a resource for further information and as documentation of the projects.

Biomechanical research projects

The IAAF and the IAF supports biomechanical projects, as a service to their Member Federations, a policy which was started at the IAAF World Championships in Rome 1987.

Other biomechanical projects were conducted:

- In 1988 at the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad, Seoul.

- In 1997, at the IAAF World Championships, Athens. The final report is available in the research documents section.

- In 1995, at the IAAF World Championships in Gothenburg. Conducted in cooperation with the Swedish Sport Institute of Karlstad and under the leadership of Anders Bergstrom a biomechanical research on “Throws” was conducted: see New Studies in Athletics (NSA): issue 4-1995 and issue 5 – 1996.

- In 2005, at the IAAF World Championships, Helsinki. Research conducted on 100m - pole vault, high jump, triple jump, javelin throw, under the leadership of Prof. Paavo Komi (FIN). The IAAF published the final report in 2008 as a supplement to NSA.

- In 2007, at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka. Conducted in cooperation with Osaka University of Health and Sport Sciences, under the leadership of Prof. Michiyoshi Ae, the IAAF received a final report on; short sprints, distance running, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin throw. The report was published in NSA: issue 2 – 2008.

- In 2009, at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Conducted in cooperation with the DLV and the leadership of Helmar Hommel (GER). The final report is available in the research documents section.

- In 2011, at the IAAF World Youth Championships of Lille, in cooperation with the Institute of Biomechanics and Orthopaedics - German Sport University Cologne (GER).

- In 2011, at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu. Conducted in cooperation with the Korean Society of Sports Biomechanics (KOR), concerning the hammer throw. The final report is available in the research documents section.

- In 2010, at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, concerning the 60m hurdles. The final report is available in the research documents section.

- In 2017, at the IAAF World Championships in London. Conducted in cooperation with the Leeds Beckett University (GBR) under the leadership of Dr Athanassios Bissas, Head of Subject - Sport & Exercise Biomechanics. The final report is available in the research documents section.
