Kenya dominated the twoday Eastern African Athletics Youth Championships that ended on Saturday 6 May in the Ugandan capital of Kampala.
The regional powerhouse almost scooped all gold medals in the men's events of the competition. Ambrose Kiptoo started off the Kenyan dominance with a win in the 3000m finals where he crossed the finishing line in a time of 8:06.83. His compatriot Joseph Kimathi with whom they dominated the field throughout the race was beaten to a sprint finish by Ugandan Philip Kipyeko who crossed with 8:08.89 to stop a Kenyan 1-2 finish on the opening day of the championship. Kimathi crossed with 8:09.68 in third position.
Joshua Ngeno clocked 5:42.19s to clinch the 2000m Steeplechase competition defeating countryman Geoffrey Kipkoech who finished second with 5:43.24 while Ethiopian Minula Onemut Ayalew crossed in third position with 5:49.41.
Elsewhere Kenyan Ogoti Duke dashed home with a 10.97 to claim the 100m final beating compatriot Mutuku Josephat who was timed at 11.29 while Uganda's Kakaire Sam could only manage a third place finish with a 11.49.
There was a double triumph for another Kenyan sprinter Ngeno Josephat who raced to 200m and 400m victories. Ngeno clocked 22.12 to beat off country man Mutuku and later completed his double feat with a well ran 47.84 in the 400m where he also stopped Geoffrey Kipkoech from Kenya.
Kenya's other dominance was in the field events where Vincent Tarus also registered a double in the men's triple and long jumps to complete Kenya's strong run across the board. Tarus was measured at 14.98m to win the Triple Jump and later was outstanding in the Long Jump which he won with a 7.11m effort.
Ugandan female sprinter Banura Moureen was the only difference in the 100m and 200m where she managed to win gold. Banura clocked 12.40 and 25.25, respectively, to win the sprint double.
Kenya again dominated the girls' distance races with victories in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Chepwogen Mercy ran a solo race in the 3000m that she easily won with 9:34.64. Chenpegetich Sheila registered a double gold when she clocked 4:24.45 to win the 1500m and later clocked 2:07.14 to win the 800m.
