World youth pole vault champion Robeilys Peinado booked her ticket to the Youth Olympic Games after winning the South American Trials in Cali on 17-18 May.
The 16-year-old, who holds the Venezuelan senior record, cleared a season’s best of 4.31m to win her event by 60cm. It was the second-best mark of her young career.
Panama’s Arturo Deliser and Brazil’s Mirna da Silva both secured a sprint double.
Deliser won the boys’ 100m in a PB of 10.56, despite running into a -1.0m/s headwind, and then won the 200m the following day in a season’s best of 21.32.
Da Silva also faced a headwind in the shorter sprint, and she clocked 11.84 into a -1.4m/s breeze. She later won the 200m in 23.99, winning by a third of a second.
Since the arrival of world champion Caterine Ibarguen, Colombian triple jumping has gone from strength to strength. 16-year-old Nhayilla Renteria could be the country’s next big hope in the event, after leaping a PB of 13.10m, putting her third on this year’s world youth list for this season so far.
