Sprinters Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Keston Bledman produced the highlights on the second day of the Trinidad and Tobago Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on Saturday (27).

Baptiste sped to victory in the women’s 100m final in 10.84, equalling her own national record and breaking the championship record.

Defending champion Michelle-Lee Ahye could not respond to flying Baptiste, and had to settle for silver in 11.17.

Bledman dominated the men’s 100m final, winning in 9.86 to equal his personal best, set three years ago on the same track.

Marcus Duncan won a close battle for the silver medal in 10.15. Darrel Brown was disqualified for a false start while defending champion Richard Thompson opted out of the final after struggling through his semi-final.

“Since April, I have been struggling with a knee injury and since then it has been a struggle to regain my fitness,” said the 2008 Olympic 100m silver medallist.

There was joy, and then sorrow, for world junior champion Machel Cedenio.

Cedenio scorched around one lap of the track in 44.29 to initially finish first in the men’s 400m final, but was later disqualified for running out of his lane.

Renny Quow was promoted from second to first, the 27-year-old retaining his title in a championship record of 44.90.

Janeil Bellille made a successful defence of her women’s 400m title, completing the lap of the track in 53.39 and winning by more than a second.
