For Greek Hrysopiyí Devetzí, it was clearly a case of saving the best for last. With just a pair of domestic wins to her credit this year, the reigning Olympic silver medallist reached a season’s best 14.89 to capture the Triple Jump title and score a major upset over Tatyana Lebedeva.

Devetzi’s effort came in the second round, breaking a brief tie for the lead with Lebedeva, the Russian who claimed sole ownership of the TDK Golden League million dollar Jackpot in Berlin last weekend. But ever the fierce competitor, Lebedeva turned the competition into a nail-biter, after reaching 14.86 in the fourth round. Yargelis Savigne of Cuba, the Helsinki silver medallist, added some drama of her own fourth round leap of 14.81 propelled her from sixth into third.

World champion Trecia Smith, who missed last weekend’s competition in Berlin with injury, settled for fourth here with a 14.69 best, four centimetres up on Anna Pyatykh, the Helsinki bronze medallist.
