With hurdling technique and speed worthy of the individual event, Jessica Ennis, of Britain, and the Americans Gayle Hunter and Alondra Cooper, all won their respective heats this morning to put themselves in good positions for their two-day test.
Ennis, winner of heat three in 13.86sec, scored 998pts, 21pts clear of the American duo, who both looked well-drilled as they clocked identical 14.01sec efforts in the preceding two heats (a personal best for Cooper).
