18 November 2001 - Eight territories ran the XVIII Central American and Caribbean Cross Country Championship in Bermuda this weekend.

Mexico dominated, with all three of its senior male runners finishing among the top four, led over the 11.8km at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton by 31-year-old Gustavo Castillo.

Castillo ended in 39:41, two seconds ahead of compatriot Romualdo Sanchez, eight seconds ahead of Puerto Rico’s Jacinto Rodriguez.

Mexico, with only three runners, were ineligible for the men’s team prize, which went to Puerto Rico.

Jamaica improved one spot from last year’s finish, Phillip Edwards (42:01) pacing the top team from English-speaking Caribbean with his ninth-place individual finish.

Bermuda was third, led by Albert "Jay" Donawa (41:01) in sixth place. Saint Lucia repeated their fourth-place finish from 2000, with 34-year-old Victor Ledgers (42:06) their top man in tenth.

Puerto Rico also took the senior women’s run, contested over 7.6km on Saturday. Mireya Ailhaud (Mexico, 31:01) was the top individual finisher, and Maribel Burgos (31:08) was third for Puerto Rico, all of whose runners were in the top six.

Jamaica, led by Kenisha Anderson (35:01), were second, followed by the US Virgin Islands, and Ruth Ann David (34:10) who ended seventh.
