Pedroso and Garcia named Cuban Athletes of the Year

Cuba's Olympic gold medallists Ivan Pedroso and Anier Garcia shared top honours for the nation's best male sportsmen for 2000, while high jump record holder Javier Sotomayor received special mentions.

Unable to choose just one, Cuban sports officials gave the Best Male Athlete Award to Olympic gold medallists Ivan Pedroso and Anier Garcia, in track and field; Filiberto Azcuy, Greco-Roman wrestling; Angel Matos, taekwondo; Mario Kindelan, Felix Savon and Jorge Gutierrez, boxing.

The individual sports of the year were boxing, track and field, and judo, with special mentions for wrestling and taekwondo.

Javier Sotomayor, high jump world record holder who won silver at Sydney Olympics, led a separate list of 12 athletes who received a special mention entitled "Most Outstanding Athletes''.
