19 October 2000 - The Mexican walking fraternity has been in the doldrums for the last month ever since Bernardo Segura was disqualified after finishing first in the Olympic 20km walk, after completing a lap of honour and while on the telephone to his country's president.

However his compatriot Cristian Berdeja lifted the gloom and the world junior gold medal in Santiago.

With a tremendous surge down the home straight, Berdeja overhauled the Russian pair of silver medallist Yevgeniy Demkov and his team mate Viktor Burayev who, after close examination of the photo-finish picture, was awarded the bronze.

Berdeja stopped the clock at a world junior best for the year 40:56.47.

The race unfolded at the halfway point as the three medallists, and Berdeja's soon-to-be disqualified compatriot Gabriel Ortiz.

Burayev tried to break away with a kilometre to go but on the final bend Demkov got back on level terms and then Berdeja made his bid for glory.

The trio lapped everyone else in the field but in the end only one tenth of a second covered the medallists. Demkov was given 40:56.53 with Burayev timed at 40:56.57.
