Yelena Isinbayeva retires

Two-time Olympic pole vault champion and three-time IAAF World Athlete of the Year Yelena Isinbayeva from Russia announced her retirement at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (19).

Isinbayeva, 34 also won three outdoor world titles and four world indoor titles.

She set the current world record of 5.06m at the Weltklasse Zurich meeting in 2009.

Isinbayeva was also elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission on Thursday.

Competitors at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games voted for four athletes in four different sports and Isinbayeva garnered 1365 votes from the 5185 competitors who voted to finish fourth overall in the poll.
