Los Angeles, USAAt the annual Rafer JohnsonJackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational athletics meeting at the University of California yesterday, an HSI International squad which contained Olympic champion Maurice Greene on the third leg sped to a 38.90 clocking in the men’s 4 x 100m relay.

HSI had run a season opener of 39.37 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on 27 March (Karron Conwright, Leonard Scott, Ato Boldon, Maurice Greene), and then improved to 38.30 at the Texas Relays on 3 April (Mickey Grimes, Leonard Scott, Ato Boldon, Maurice Greene) behind a USA squad's world season lead of 38.14.

Yesterday's quartet was made up of Hamdan Al Bishi (KSA), Ato Boldon (TRI), Maurice Greene (USA) and Karron Conwright (USA). # see note below re squad composition.

Al Bishi also won his specialist individual event with a 45.79 second run yesterday. He was the 2000 World Junior champion and more recently has taken the senior 2002 Asian Games and 2003 Asian Championships 400m silver medals, and is one of a number of Saudi Arabian athletes that are looked after by  the HSI Int. management team of Emanuel Hudson and John Smith.

Elsewhere in the mainly domestic programme, Larry Wade high hurdled in 13.44 seconds, Kyle Erickson took the one lap equivalent in 49.41, while former three-time World champion John Godina put the shot 20.72m.

In the women’s events, Torri Edwards won the 200m in 22.73.

# NB. there is some confusion regarding whether Mickey Grimes or Al Bishi actually ran the lead-off leg in the HSI team. The web site of UCLA, the university venue for the meet, states it was Grimes but the results section on the same site clearly states Al Bishi as the first man in the quartet.
