Claretti 70m Hammer effort the highlight in Algiers

More than 5000 spectators were treated to an excellent competition in the Women’s Hammer Throw, where many of the world’s best participated, to highlight the Meeting International d’Alger on Thursday (11).

The Algiers CAA GP Memorial Dr Brahim Baba is one of a select group of Area meetings at which points can be acquired by athletes to qualify for the IAAF / VTB Bank World Athletics Final, to be held on 12-13 September in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Men’s programme

In the Long Jump Nima Issam of Algeria once again confronted the talented Namibian Louw Stephan and Egyptian Marsel Hatem. Nima won with 8.00m and Louw took the second place with 7.83m and in third position the Egyptian champion with 7.60m.

Algerian Hadj Lazib Othmane won the 110m Hurdles in 13.67, a new Algerian record, bettering Kuwaiti Abdulaziz Al Mandeel (14.04).

In the 400m, Nyongani Young Talkmore of Zimbabwe won in 46.06, ahead of Algeria’s Laabi Bouraada (46.69) and Houari Mazouni (47.71).

The men’s 800m featured a solid field, and was won by Algerian Manceur Najim in 1:47.71 ahead of another Algerian  Walid Meliani of Algeria was second (1:48.47) and Iranian Ehsan Mohajershojaei (1:48.84).

In the Hammer Throw, Ukraina’s Rubanko Artem took top honours with a 78.63m throw, well ahead of Latvian Igor Sokolovs (78.42) and Croat Andras Haklits  (75.49).

In a hotly contested 5000m, Algerian Saidi Sief Ali (13.32.69) got the better of  Kenyan athletes  Kipengetich Robert Sigei 13.33.24, and Bett Josphat (13.33.69).

Nichola Ciotti of Italy won the High Jump with a 2.24 success, with Botswana’s Kabelo Kyosiemane (2.24) taking second.

And in the 1500m three Algerians swept the podium, with Antar Zerguelaine (3:36.77) leading Toufik Makhloufi (3.37.45) and Imad Touil (3.38.80), the 2008 World junior champion who notched a PB.

Women’s events

In the Hammer Throw Clarissa Claretti of Italy won the event by 70.04m ahead of Moldovan Marghieva sisters Zalina (69.14m) and Marina (65.93m).

Mayeyeva Svitlana of Ukraina won the women’s Triple Jump with 13.72m, well ahead of Uzbekistan’s Anastasya Juravleva (13.33m) and Italian Sylvia Gucchi (13.32m).

Bobby Gay Wilkins of Jamaica won the 400m in (52.16), just ahead of Zahra Bouras of Algeria (53.66) and Russian Oxana Sukhacheva (54.45).
