The world's fastest man Usain Bolt and Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva have been voted the International Sports Press Association’s (AIPS) 2008 Athletes of the Year (across all sports) in an online poll which attracted the votes of 571 journalists from 96 nations.
Both athletes shone in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, with Bolt smashing the 100m world record in a time of 9.69 seconds and backing up four days later to break Michael Johnson’s long standing 200m World record setting a new mark of 19.30 seconds.
The 22-year-old then went on to capture a third gold by joining former World 100m record-holder Asafa Powell and his Jamaican team mates to set a third World record in the 4x100m relay in 37.10 seconds. This squad took second place in the Team of the Year category behind the Spanish national football team.
Isinbayeva, who was undefeated outdoors in 2008, defended her Olympic Pole Vault title in Beijing with a vault of 5.05 metres, securing her second successive Olympic gold medal.

Bolt et Isinbayeva plébiscités par la presse sportive
L'homme le plus rapide du monde, Usain Bolt, et la perchiste russe Yelena Isinbayeva ont été élus Sportifs de l'Année 2008 (tous sports confondus) par l'Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive (AIPS) au terme d'un vote en ligne auquel ont participé 571 journalistes issus de 96 nations.
Les deux athlètes ont particulièrement brillé à l'occasion des Jeux Olympiques de Beijing 2008. Bolt y a d'abord explosé le record du monde du 100m avec un chrono de 9"69 avant, quatre jours plus tard, de battre le record du monde du 200m, établi par Michael Johnson douze ans auparavant, avec un temps de 19"30.
Le jeune coureur de 22 ans a ensuite remporté un troisième titre olympique, avec le 4x100m jamaïcain, en compagnie notamment d'Asafa Powell, le précédent détenteur du record du monde du 100m. Cette victoire a également été assortie d'un nouveau record du monde de 37"10. Cette équipe a terminé seconde dans la catégorie "Équipe de l'année", derrière la sélection nationale espagnole de football.
Isinbayeva, invaincue en plein air en 2008, a défendu avec succès son titre olympique dans le saut à la perche de Beijing, ayant effacé une barre de 5,05m, pour s'assurer d'un second titre olympique consécutif.
