Terry Albritton, who at the age of 21 broke the World record in the men’s Shot Put in 1976 in Honolulu, has died at the age of 50, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on 6 October.

The cause of Albritton's death on 1 September in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is unclear. One report said he died of a heart attack, and one of Albritton's sons said the Cambodian government gave the cause of death as asthma.

Competing in Honolulu at an All Comers meet on 21 February 1976, Albritton put 21.85m with his first release, and established a marvellous series – 20.85; x; 20.42; x 20.82; 21.82. His best surpassed Al Feurbach’s World record 21.82m mark which had been set just less than 3 years before in San Jose, California.

A memorial service was held for Albritton on Saturday (1 Oct) at Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens on Maui, where he had lived and worked for many years before moving to Thailand and then Cambodia. He had been involved in writing projects at the time of his death.

Before moving to Cambodia in June 2004, Albritton had worked for 14 years as a teacher and coach at St. Anthony High School in Maui. He also had worked as a strength coach at the University of Hawaii.

Albritton is survived by sons Shane and Thomas, sisters Lorelei Davies and Marla Ramirez Albritton, a grandson and a nephew.
