25 June 2001 – Vaasa, Finland - Finland’s World javelin champion Aki Parviainen
established a new world season’s best on Saturday with a first round throw of 92.41
metres here at the European Cup first league meeting in Vaasa and so helped to secure the
Finnish men’s promotion to next year’s Super League Final in Annecy.
Parviainen’s massive throw had an unusually low flight, roared on by a crowd of between 5 - 6,000 spectators who simultaneously witnessed Sweden’s Patrik Kristiansson at his first attempt clear a new Nordic record height of 5.83 metres in the men’s pole vault. Parviainen followed up with a second throw of 87.25 metres with fouls in the last two rounds, while Kristiansson ended the pole vault with three failed attempts at 5.91m.
“I was aware that Andreas Thorkildsen (world junior record holder; 2nd 82.15m ) was throwing very consistently in the 82 metre range in his recent competitions and so I knew that I had to make a long throw to be sure of winning” said an elated Parviainen.
Trying to explain the length of the throw Parviainen continued “the runway here is very good because it has a new surface and the throwers also received excellent support particularly from the spectators who watched from the back straight”.
Parviainen originally planned to travel next to Rome for the Golden League meeting but has now decided to go back into training as he is still trying to perfect the recent technical changes he has been making under the guidance of his coach Leo Pusa. They are trying to get more rotation into his throwing following the example set by Jan Zelezny whose technique has revolutionised the event.
Parviainen will next throw in a week,s time at the famous javelin carnival event in Pihtipudas explaining that he is only breaking his training schedule for this meeting because of the carnival’s unique place in javelin history.
