Javelin thrower Nikola Brejchova gave herself the perfect 30th birthday present with a first throw of 64.08 metres to win the Czech national title in Plzen yesterday.
More than 3000 spectators turned out for the first day of the Czech National Championships and saw Brejchova produce her best result since 2002 and the third longest throw in the world this year.
The javelin was one of the highlights of the competition with runner-up Jarmila Klimesova and third-placed Barbora Spotakova throwing personal bests of 62.00m and 59.60m respectively.
Another noteworthy performance was that of 17-year-old Denisa Scerbova in the long jump.
The talented youngster bettered the national junior record three times, her final leap measuring 6.68m.
Decathlon World record holder Roman Sebrle took part in some events despite not feeling 100%.
He said: "I did not train because of health problems. But my club asked me to compete. Next week I will start my Olympic preparations."
