Kenyan Jackson Kipkoech won the annual Tiberias Marathon near the Sea of Galilee in Israel today (8), which took place despite the ongoing fighting in Gaza, and to the north across the border into Lebanon.

Athletes from 22 different countries took part in the event.

Kipkoech recorded a time of 2:08:07, the fastest ever seen in the country,  as he improved on his third-place finish a year ago.

The time set a new record on Israeli soil, and Kipkoech collected a US 50,000 bonus in recognition.

Leonard Mucheru set the course record here 12 months ago but had to settle for second place in 2:09:37, ahead of a third Kenyan, Philemon Boit, who finished in 2:10:54.

A Kenyan also claimed the women's title as Irene Kosgei recorded a time of
2:39:7 to finish ahead of Ethiopia's Asrat Addis, who was more than three minutes behind.
