IAAF brings back 7 wins out of 7 formula for the Golden League Jackpot
28 February 2002 -VIENNA - Austria - Following a meeting today of the IAAF Golden League Working Group, it was agreed that the Golden League Jackpot would return to its original format for the 2002 season. An athlete will now need to win every event on the GL circuit to qualify for a share of the IAAF Golden League Jackpot.
The GL Working Group - composed of representatives of the GL Meetings in Berlin, Brussels, Monaco, Oslo, Paris St-Denis, Rome and Zurich and IAAF delegates led by President Lamine Diack - decided to return to the "must win all" concept: "It is dramatic, easy to understand and attractive in marketing terms," said Diack. For the past two seasons, in the interests of athletes who needed to prepare for major competitions outside of Europe (Sydney Olympics in 2000, Edmonton World Champs in 2001), 5 out of 7 wins has been sufficient for a share of the Jackpot.
The IAAF Golden League brings together the world's top athletes, in the world's top invitation meetings. More details about the 2002 season, as well as a completely new GL concept from 2003, will be finalised at the next meeting of the Working Group set for 22 March, just prior to the World Cross Country Championships.
