Wang Jianan led the first Asian men’s field event medal sweep in the history of the IAAF World Junior Championships and in the process he also became the second Chinese athlete to win the long jump world junior title with 8.08m.<o:p></o:p>The 2013 Asian champion was the only man to jump farther than eight metres in the final.<o:p></o:p>The 2011 world youth champion Lin Qing erupted in joy after his opening leap of 7.94m, before his countryman Wang moved to the lead with a wind-assisted 8.07m, just three centimetres shy of his personal best.<o:p></o:p>He then improved to 8.08m in the following round.<o:p></o:p>Lin took the silver medal with his opening leap while Japan’s Shotaro Shiroyama completed an Asian sweep with a wind-assisted 7.83m, also with his opening attempt.<o:p></o:p>This is only the third medal sweep by Asian athletes in the history of the World Junior Championships.<o:p></o:p>Javier Clavelo Robinson for the IAAF<o:p></o:p>

The 2014 Chinese Junior Championships in Lishui, Zhejiang province, underlined the medal hopes of this nation at next month’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, USA, with some outstanding performances in several field events across the three days of the event, which finished on Sunday (22).Many of these medal hopes have already proven themselves by winning medals at previous editions of the IAAF World Youth Championships. World youth and Asian junior champion Xie Yuchen was second with 53.52m, a couple of metres shy of her best mark this year (55.65m). Both discus throwers are close to the top of the 2014 world junior lists and will be looking for medals at Oregon 2014.Asian junior triple jump champion and world youth silver medallist Wang Rong did not compete, but Asian junior long jump champion Li Xiaohong completed a horizontal jumps double. After winning the long jump with 6.14m on Friday she bounded out to 13.53m in the triple jump. She has an outdoor triple jump best of 13.70m this season and has jumped 14.06m indoors in 2013.There will be some Chinese medal hopes in the men’s jumps as well in Eugene. In the absence of Asian junior champion Fang Yaoqing, the triple jump was won by Wu Lianglin with a personal best of 16.26m. In the long jump, Asian junior champion and 2011 world youth champion Lin Qing won with 7.75m, having jumped a personal best of 7.99m in Chinese Taipei to win his continental title a week ago.Perhaps surprisingly, the pole vault has become one of the stronger men’s event in China in recent years and Huang Bokai is continuing this tradition. He won the silver at the 2013 World Youth Championships and gold at the Asian Juniors in 2014 a week ago and cleared a 5.40m personal best to win at this meeting. Huang is in equal second place on the world junior lists this season.Wang Guozhong, fourth on the world junior list with 50.61 this season, won the 400m hurdles in 50.92 to provide arguably the top mark on the track. The 16th Asian Junior Championships, held at the Taipei City Stadium in Chinese Taipei, ended on Sunday (15) after four days of competition as several of Asia’s top teenagers demonstrated their talent ahead of the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships next month.Two of the most likely gold medal contenders, Chinese long jumper Lin Qing and Qatari hammer thrower Ashraf Amjad El Seify, had commanding wins in their specialist events.Lin, the 2011 world youth champion, opened with 7.90m and then added three centimetres to his best set two years ago when he was 17, with his third-round effort of 7.99m. On the track, Liang Xiao-Jing clinched gold in the 100m in 11.58 and helped China win the 4x100m relay in 45.34.In addition to the two Wangs, field event successes came when Li Chao Qun clinched gold in the pole vault with 4.05m and Li Xiao-Hong won the long jump with 6.27m.In the throws, Xu Jia Qi reached 16.50m to win the shot put and Xie Yu Chen took the discus with 55.65m.The Chinese men were also strong in the field events. Fang Yao-Qing was particularly impressive in the triple jump as he finished first by almost a metre with his 16.32m to move up to third place in the 2014 junior lists.Also clinching titles for the Chinese men were Huang Bo-Kai, who cleared 5.25m in the pole vault, and high jumper Bai Jia-Xu who was the only man over 2.10m.Japan’s Takuya Kawakami won a hotly contested men’s 100m, clocking 10.47, and Japan also won the 4x100m in 39.49.Japanese women took both hurdles events with Mako Fukube winning the 100m hurdles in 13.98 and Akiko Ito clocking 58.80 in the 400m hurdles. Japan’s Maki Izumida also featured in a rare 5000m dead heat. She and Kyrgyzstan's Daria Maslova – who also won the 3000m – could not be separated at the end of the 12-and-a-half-lap race and both were awarded gold and credited with the same time of 16:18.35. Japanese javelin thrower Shiori Touma also had a good win in the women’s event with 55.75m.Qatar dominated the men’s track events from 400m upwards. Musaab Adam Ali scored a fine double with wins in both the 5000m with 14:34.07 and 3000m steeplechase in 9:02.80. Also getting gold for Qatar on the track were Mohamed Nasir E Abbas, who won the 400m in 47.31; Mohamed Elnour Mohamed took the 800m in 1:52.73 and Idriss Moussa Youssouf triumphed over 1500m in 3:53.36.CJ Chua for the IAAF
