The 2014 World Athlete of the Year Renaud Lavillenie will compete at the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, the 2015 IAAF Diamond League final on 11 September, the meeting organisers announced on Tuesday (31).The flying French pole vaulter has been unbeaten this winter, going over six metres at no fewer than five meetings, culminating in a world-leading 6.04m at the European Indoor Championship in Prague on 8 March. Lavillenie has targeted six metres in the King Baudouin Stadium in the Belgian capital, a height no other athlete has ever jumped in Brussels, not even Lavillenie&rsquo;s idol Sergey Bubka, the man he supplanted as world record holder last year.He won in Brussels last September when he cleared an outdoor world-leading mark of 5.93m to clinch his fifth successive Diamond Race win in the pole vault.Australia&rsquo;s Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson will also be in Brussels this coming September.The Australian has already competed on five occasions in Brussels but, unlike Lavillenie, she is still chasing her first victory. Sally Pearson wasted no time in blasting out a statement of intent as she set about the task of emulating Lolo Jones as a back-to-back two-time winner of the women’s 60m hurdles title at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. Running in the first of four first round heats, the 2008 Olympic champion from Australia was clear at the first hurdle and produced a virtually flawless performance as she powered to a decisive victory.Pearson’s winning time, 7.79, equalled the world leading mark she set in Berlin last Saturday and was the fastest ever heat performance at the World Indoor Championships, eclipsing the 7.85 that she clocked in the preliminary round in Istanbul two years ago. The woman from the Gold Coast is clearly regaining her Midas touch after a 2013 outdoor season hampered by hamstring trouble, when the 2011 World Athlete of the Year had to settle for the silver medal at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow.In Pearson’s wake, Belgium’s 2009 European champion Eline Berings, took second place in 7.95, a season’s best.In heat two, US champion Nia Ali claimed victory in 7.87, with Panama’s Yvette Lewis setting an area record of 7.97 in second placeCindy Billaud won the third heat with ease, clocking a personal best of 7.87, which was also the fastest time by a European this year, but on her way back from smacking into the break-board on the edge of the banked track, the Frenchwoman took a nasty tumble. Thankfully, the 32-year-old quickly picked herself up and left the arena apparently unhindered by injury. Eline Berings and Sara Aerts, the two fastest Belgian 60m hurdlers in history, are eager to achieve the World Indoors qualifying time of 8.07 at the Flanders Indoor meeting in Gent and top-quality opposition has been assembled for them at the IAAF Indoor Permit meeting on 9 February.Berings, the 2009 European indoor champion, finished second to Yvette Lewis at last year’s Flanders Indoor meeting. Lewis, who has a PB of 7.84 and now represents Panama, returns to defend her title.Olympic bronze medallist Kellie Wells is the fastest in the field. The 2011 US champion indoors and outdoors boasts PBs of 7.79 in the 60m hurdles and 12.48 for the 100m hurdles.Current world leader Cindy Billaud is also in the field. The Frenchwoman improved to 12.59 in the 100m hurdles last year and finished seventh at the IAAF World Championships.The women’s 60m hurdles is the latest field to be revealed for the Flanders Indoor meeting.
