Poland&rsquo;s three-time Olympic gold medallist Irena Szewinska, one of the legends among the first group of seven World Athletics Heritage Plaques announced in November 2018, was honoured last night (19 August). Her plaque, which specifically commemorates the 400m world record (49.75) which Szewinska set in Bydgoszcz on 22 June 1976, was appropriately unveiled before start of the Szewinska Memorial meeting in the northern Polish city.

The ceremony, which took place on the track of the Zawiszy Zdzisława stadium, was attended by Janusz Szewinski, the husband of the late Irena, and their two sons Andrzej and Jaroslaw.
Also taking part in the ceremony were Rafal Bruski, Mayor of Bydgoszcz, Piotr Dlugosielski, Head of International Relations of the Polish Athletic Association, and Krzysztof Wolsztynski, the Meeting Director of the Szewinska Memorial.
A video message from World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, was played on the stadium&rsquo;s screen. Coe reflected on many of Szewinska's feats, noting that she was the first woman to break 50 seconds for 400m and is the only athlete in history, male or female, to have set world records at 100m, 200m and 400m.

The plaque will be permanently on display in the stadium.

The World Athletics Heritage Plaque, which was awarded to the Athens Marathon in 2019, has been unveiled in the Greek capital at the offices of SEGAS, the Greek athletics federation.
The unveiling took place on Friday 3 July 2020, during the official opening of registrations for the 2020 edition of the &ldquo;Athens Marathon. The Authentic&rdquo; which is scheduled to take place on 8 November.
&ldquo;We considered this date as most suitable, especially after all the unprecedented changes we all had to face due to the pandemic. We wanted to show everyone, that life goes on and we can make plans, while at the same time taking all necessary measures,&rdquo; confirmed Kostas Panagopoulos, SEGAS President.
The plaque was introduced by Tota Golfinopoulou, the Marathon&rsquo;s Event Services Manager.

Before the start of the Sir Graeme Douglas International in Auckland today, the World Athletics Heritage Plaque, which was awarded last year to honour the coaching legend Arthur Lydiard, was presented to Athletics New Zealand by World Athletics Vice President Geoff Gardner.
Gardner, in his first official capacity in New Zealand as Vice President since being elected in September, handed over the plaque to Cameron Taylor, chair of the Board of Athletics New Zealand, and a 1992 Barcelona Olympian.
The Heritage Plaque which was awarded to Arthur Lydiard in the posthumous &lsquo;Legends&rsquo; category, recognises his outstanding contribution to worldwide history and development of athletics.
Present at the ceremony were two of Arthur&rsquo;s sons, Gary and Roy, as well as six of his champion athletes:
Barry Magee, marathon bronze medallist 1960 Rome Olympic Games, Mike Ryan, marathon bronze medallist 1968 Mexico Olympic Games, Heather Matthews, silver medallist 3000m 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games, Jeff Julian, won 11 NZ titles and attended two Olympic and three Commonwealth Games, Bill Rodger, NZ six mile champion 1956, and Bryan Rose, NZ Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the NZ team that won the 1975 World Cross Country Championship.
The presentation of the plaque was accompanied by the following words from Gardner:

"Lydiard guided Peter Snell and Murray Halberg to Olympic gold medals and Barry Magee, John Davies and Mike Ryan to Olympic bronze medals.
&ldquo;Auckland born and bred, Lydiard went away from the accepted norm of middle to long distance coaching when, in 1949, he embarked on a seven-days-a-week marathon type training regime.
&ldquo;The 1960 Rome Olympics catapulted Lydiard on to the world stage.
&ldquo;New Zealand won two gold medals barely an hour apart as unheralded Peter Snell captured the 800m title and then Murray Halberg, Lydiard&rsquo;s first serious disciple, stunned the world with his catch-me-if-you-can 5000m triumph.
&ldquo;Snell returned to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics to win the 800m and 1500m double.
"Lydiard was recognized internationally not only for training elite athletes but for making jogging popular for fitness.

World 5000m finalist Elle Purrier provided the unexpected highlight of the Millrose Games in New York on Saturday (8), winning the women&rsquo;s Wanamaker Mile in a North American indoor record of 4:16.85, the second-fastest indoor performance in history.
In what proved to be the greatest depth women&rsquo;s indoor mile ever, the two women who followed Purrier across the finish line &ndash; Germany&rsquo;s Konstanze Klosterhalfen and Britain&rsquo;s Jemma Reekie &ndash; also moved into the top five on the world indoor all-time list, clocking national indoor records of 4:17.26 and 4:17.88 respectively.
In fourth, Gabriela DeBues-Stafford set a Canadian indoor record of 4:19.73, also inside the previous North American indoor record of 4:20.5 that had stood to Mary Tabb since 1982.
Purrier and Reekie took turns at the front over the first few laps before Klosterhalfen assumed the lead for most of the rest of the race, passing 800m in 2:08.19 and 1000m in 2:40.43. The world 5000m bronze medallist still led as they approached the final lap with DeBues-Stafford sitting in second place about four metres adrift, just ahead of Purrier and Reekie.
Purrier, known for her strong finish, moved into second place on the back straight and continued to make up ground on Klosterhalfen, dragging Reekie with her. She moved up a gear as she came off the final bend and strode past the German, crossing the line in 4:16.85.

 &ldquo;This is only my second race of the year so far, so I wasn&rsquo;t really sure of my fitness,&rdquo; said Purrier, who won over two miles at the World Athletics Indoor Tour meeting in Boston two weeks ago. &ldquo;On the second-to-last lap I started feeling a bit more confident and tried to make a move. I wasn&rsquo;t looking at the splits and was just focused on competing. I just competed, it was a huge shock. I ran a pretty similar time on the roads (4:17), but doing it on the track is totally different. I hadn&rsquo;t thought of the American record at all.&rdquo;
The first four finishers also set 1500m PBs en route. Klosterhalfen set a German indoor 1500m record of 3:59.87, Purrier clocked 4:00.20, just 0.22 shy of the North American indoor record, Reekie broke training partner Laura Muir's British indoor record with 4:00.52 and DeBues-Stafford ran a Canadian indoor best of 4:00.80.
<h3>Brazier and Wilson improve own continental records</h3>
Donavan Brazier and Ajee Wilson both shaved a bit of time off their own North American indoor records for 800m.
Brazier, the world 800m champion, hit the front with 200 metres to go and covered the final circuit in 24.89 seconds to win in 1:44.22, taking 0.19 off the North American indoor record he set when finishing second at last year&rsquo;s Millrose Games. He ran significant negative splits too, covering the first half in 53.04 and the second in 51.18.
Bryce Hoppel, winner of the 1000m in Boston two weeks ago, finished second in 1:45.70.
Wilson was similarly dominant in the women&rsquo;s event. After the field was paced through 400m in 56.22, Jamaica&rsquo;s Natoya Goule led at 600m, reached in 1:28.16 with Wilson close behind in second. The world bronze medallist then eased into the lead and kicked on to win in 1:58.29, moving from 19th to 13th on the world indoor all-time list. Goule finished second in 1:59.35.
<h3>World leads for Crouser and Morris</h3>
Olympic shot put champion Ryan Crouser got his 2020 campaign off to a strong start, throwing within 14 centimetres of the meeting record he set last year.
He led from the outset, opening with 21.24m &ndash; a mark that was equalled by world champion Joe Kovacs &ndash; before improving to 21.59m in round three. Kovacs went out to 21.34m, his best of the night, but Crouser improved to 21.69m and then a world-leading 22.19m in round five.
The 27-year-old now owns three of the 10 best indoor marks in history.
World indoor champion Sandi Morris entered the pole vault at 4.50m, a height which no other competitor managed to clear. She then sailed over 4.65m on her second attempt, 4.75m on her first and then 4.81m on her second before nailing 4.91m on her first try.
The world silver medallist ended her series by attempting a would-be world record height of 5.04m but, unlike Armand Duplantis in Torun a few hours earlier, was ultimately unsuccessful.
World indoor champion Kendra Harrison won the 60m hurdles in 7.90, 0.06 ahead of world champion Nia Ali.
World indoor bronze medallist Ronnie Baker made a welcome return to indoor action, clocking 6.54 to win the men&rsquo;s 60m from Boston winner Demek Kemp (6.56). Javiane Oliver won the women&rsquo;s event in 7.13.
Elsewhere, world 400m hurdles silver medallist Rai Benjamin won the 300m in a meeting record of 32.35 and Wadeline Jonathas took the 400m in 51.93. Britain&rsquo;s Chris O&rsquo;Hare regained his Wanamaker Mile title from two years ago, winning by almost a second in 3:55.61.
<h3>Millrose Games honoured with Heritage Plaque</h3>
The Millrose Games became the latest meeting to be presented with a <a href="https://www.worldathletics.org/heritage/plaque-home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Athletics Heritage Plaque</a>.
In recognition of the illustrious history of the NYRR Millrose Games and Wanamaker Mile, Armory Foundation Co-Presidents Rita Finkel and Jonathan Schindel and NYRR CEO Michael Capiraso accepted the award from USATF CEO Max Siegel and USATF COO Renee Washington.

World 5000m finalist Elle Purrier provided the unexpected highlight of the Millrose Games in New York on Saturday (8), winning the women’s Wanamaker Mile in a North American indoor record of 4:16.85, the second-fastest indoor performance in history.

For the second time in three competitions this year, Yaroslava Mahuchikh broke the world U20 indoor high jump record with a 2.02m* leap to highlight the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe on Friday (31).
Opening with back-to-back clearances at 1.85m and 1.89m, the rising Ukrainian star topped 1.99m on her first attempt to wrestle the lead from compatriot Yuliya Levchenko, whose first miss of the night came at that height. She then cleared on her second attempt, raising the bar to 2.02m.
Mahuchikh hit the bar on the way down on her first attempt but it stayed on, adding another centimetre to the U20 mark she set in in Lviv 13 days ago.
She continued with three tries at 2.04m, the third coming closest. Her success didn&rsquo;t surprise her.
"Yes I expected it because in Cottbus two days ago I tried 2.02m, and I thought I could do it here. And I did it on my first jump,&rdquo; said Mahuchikh, who topped a world U20 outdoor record of 2.04m to take world silver in Doha last year. Revisiting that height isn&rsquo;t too far off either, she said.
"My third jump was very close so I hope next time I will make it."&nbsp;
Levchenko finished second with Germany's Imke Onnen topping 1.96m to equal her lifetime best to finish third.
<h3>Bekh-Romanchuk upsets Mihambo</h3>
Mahuchikh's was one of five early season world leads that electrified the capacity crowd of 5000-plus at the DM Arena for the 36th edition of the meeting, this year serving as the second stop of the World Athletics Indoor Tour in which athletes compete for points in designated tour disciplines.

Another came in the women's long jump where the late-hour entry of world champion Malaika Mihambo energised the proceedings. Despite some early problems with her rhythm, Mihambo came through with a 6.76m leap in the second round, another world lead. But it was short-lived.
Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine, who finished second to Mihambo at the World Championships last year, took command in the next round with a 6.92m leap, adding seven centimetres to her indoor career best and ultimately putting the competition out of reach. Mihambo improved to 6.83m in round four before deciding to retire for the night.
Swede Khaddi Sagnia was third with 6.72m.
<h3>Worku and Amusan impress</h3>
The most impressive performance on the track came in the women's 3000m where Fantu Worku admirably lived up to her favourite's role, running away with a convincing victory in 8:37.58, another early season world lead.

The Ethiopian, who at just 20 already has two World Championship sixth-place finishes to her credit - over 3000m in 2018 indoors and 5000m in 2019 outdoors - ran at the front over the final kilometre, clicking off 34 to 35-second laps to easily fend off Quailyne Jebiwott Kiprop, who clocked 8:40.27 for second. Further back, Luiza Gega was third in 8:44.46, an Albanian record.
Tobi Amusan was also pleased with her victory in the 60m hurdles.
The rising Nigerian star took control by the midway point and powered away to a 7.84 win, clipping 0.03 from her previous best.
&ldquo;The goal was just to come out and execute every round and I think I did that,&rdquo; said Amusan, who was fourth in the 100m hurdles at last year&rsquo;s World Championships. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been working on the weakest part of my race - the first four hurdles.&rdquo;
She races next in Dusseldorf on Tuesday.
Christina Clemons of the US was second in 7.98, holding off Finland's Reetta Hurske, Italy&rsquo;s Luminosa Bogliolo and Hungary&rsquo;s Luca Kozak who crossed the line in unison, clocking 8.02.&nbsp;

<h3>Middle distance wins for Embaye and Birgen</h3>
When she held off Lemlem Hailu's attempt for the lead at the bell, world steeplechase champion Beatrice Chepkoech looked to be in firm command of the evening-capping 1500m. That appearance held up until the final 20 metres when it quickly began to unravel.
Fading badly on the inside, three runners swept by on the outside, with Axumawit Embaye prevailing in a blanket finish in 4:07.94, just ahead of Ugandan Winnie Nanyondo (4:08.06) and Hailu who finished off an Ethiopian 1-3.
Earlier, Bethwel Birgen won his second 3000m tour race in six days, this time holding off Bahrain's Birhanu Balew by nearly a second and a half in 7:38.50, another world lead and lifetime best for the Kenyan veteran.
<h3>World lead for Smaili</h3>
Elsewhere on the point-scoring programme, Mostafa Smaili took a commanding victory in the 800m in 1:46.38, another early season world lead. The slight Moroccan took the lead at the bell, quickly built a comfortable gap and was never tested. Alvaro de Arriba of Spain was a distant second in 1:47.87.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, there was an unlikely bit of synchronicity in the women&rsquo;s 400m where the winners of the two heats were credited with the same time, 52.56: Ayomide Folorunso of Italy in the first and Swiss Lea Sprunger in the second. Folorunso was given the nod.
Renaud Lavillenie won the pole vault on countback at 5.70m, holding off brother Valentin and Dutchman Menno Vloon. World champion Sam Kendricks had an off night, leaving the competition after three misses at 5.60m to put an inauspicious end to his streak of consecutive 5.80m meetings, which he extended to 14 in Cottbus on Wednesday.

<h3>Caceres takes long jump showdown</h3>
The men's long jump, another non-scoring event, came down to the final leap - by design. In a one-off experimental set-up, the top three jumpers from the first five rounds earned a sixth leap, with the farthest in the final round declared the winner.
With a slot of its own on the programme, the final round did command and receive the crowd's attention. Ukraine's Vladyslav Mazur went first but faltered, reaching just 7.67m, well down on his 7.84m best from round five.
Eusebio Caceres, however, responded well, reaching 7.99m to apply the pressure on hometown hope Julian Howard, who led the competition after five rounds at 7.88m. Energised by the vocal fans, Howard landed well beyond the eight-metre mark but behind him a red flag was raised, handing victory to the Spaniard.
<h3>Obergfoll honoured</h3>
There were emotional highlights off the track, the most rousing a medal ceremony for retired javelin thrower Christina Obergfoll who received her bronze medal from the 2011 World Championships. The crowd honoured Obergfoll with a stirring five-minute standing ovation, quite likely the longest and loudest she'd ever experienced, before being presented by flowers, high fives and hugs from several retired German athletes.&nbsp;
<h3>Meeting honoured with World Athletics Heritage Plaque</h3>
The action this evening wouldn't have been possible without the strong legacy and foundation the meeting has been built upon. Its contribution to the sport was recognised at a ceremony this afternoon as World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon presented organisers with the World Athletics Heritage Plaque.

"World Athletics is proud to honour the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe," Ridgeon said during a ceremony at Karlsruhe's Town Hall. "The exciting and engaging competition, which annually sees this meeting play out to a packed stadium, has been hugely influential in the development of interest in international indoor athletics." Ridgeon later made a brief presentation during the meeting itself.
Launched in December 2018, the Plaque is awarded for &ldquo;an outstanding contribution to the worldwide history and development of the sport of track &amp; field athletics and of out of stadia athletics disciplines such as cross country, mountain, road, trail and ultra-running, and race walking."
For more than 30 years the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe has attracted world and Olympic champions at the start of each year. Established in 1985, the meeting was first held at the Europahalle but in 2015 moved to the DM-Arena. Two of the current women&rsquo;s world indoor records were set in Karlsruhe: Genzebe Dibaba at 1500m in 2014 and Susanna Kallur at 60m hurdles in 2008.

Mahuchikh tops 2.02m world U20 indoor record in Karlsruhe

It is just over a year now since World Athletics President Sebastian Coe announced the creation of the <a href="https://www.worldathletics.org/heritage/plaque-home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Athletics Heritage Plaque</a>. This location-based award honours outstanding contributions to the worldwide history and development of athletics.
Today, Sunday 26 January, the first World Athletics Heritage Plaque was unveiled at the Cinque Mulini Cross Country, San Vittore Olona, Milan, Italy. 1983 World and 1984 Olympic 10,000m champion Alberto Cova was among the former winners of the race to join the celebrations with the current president of the organising club Guiseppe Gallo Stampino, and four other former club presidents.

The plaque which honours Cinque Mulini, one of the world's oldest invitational cross-country meetings and a member of the World Athletics Cross Country Permit series, is the first of 54 plaques which will be unveiled in public around the globe during the coming months.
On 2 December 2018, at the same time as creating the honour, Sebastian Coe announced a public competition to design the plaque. It was won at the end of March 2019 by Fernando Silva, a 27-year-old resident and recreational runner from the Brazilian city of Manaus.
Since then the plaque has been refined by the world-renowned Italian medal and trophy manufacturer Bertoni, who are based in Milan. With the renaming and branding of the &lsquo;IAAF&rsquo; to &lsquo;World Athletics&rsquo; confirmed by Congress in Doha prior to the World Championships last autumn, in November the manufacturing of the plaques commenced.
Despite not having a plaque to present until now, during the year a total of <a href="https://www.worldathletics.org/heritage/plaque-criteria" target="_blank" rel="noopener">54 locations have been honoured across the five plaque categories</a>. These locations are spread across the world.
There will be some new plaque locations announcements during 2020 but this year the plaque programme will largely concentrate on unveiling those already awarded. The ceremonies will now start to come thick and fast. Next Friday (31 January), World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon will be in Karlsruhe, Germany to officially hand over the plaque to the annual indoor meeting, and then on Saturday 8 February in New York, the Millrose Games, the world&rsquo;s oldest invitational indoor meeting, will unveil their plaque.

It is just over a year now since World Athletics President Sebastian Coe announced the creation of the World Athletics Heritage Plaque. This location-based award honours outstanding contributions to the worldwide history and development of athletics.

World Athletics Heritage Plaque – global roll-out begins at the Cinque Mulini

Ethiopian teenager Tadese Worku and defending champion Winfred Mutile Yavi from Bahrain will be in the spotlight at the 88th edition of the Cinque Mulini in San Vittore Olona, Italy, the seventh leg of this season&rsquo;s World Athletics Cross Country Permit, on Sunday (26).
The 2020 edition of the famous Italian cross country race will be highlighted by a battle between the new wave of African stars, duded &ldquo;Generation Z&rdquo; by race organisers, and the best Italian middle distance runners.
Three of the top four finishers in the U20 race at last year&rsquo;s World Cross Country Championships - Worku, Oscar Chelimo from Uganda and Leonard Kipkemboi Bett from Kenya - will line-up in the men&rsquo;s race.
Worku, who turned 18 on 20 January, won the U20 silver medal in Aarhus last March. He has been one of most consistent cross country runners this season with back-to-back wins in the World Athletics Cross Country Permit meetings in Elgoibar and Seville. Worku also won the Giro di Castelbuono road race last July, finished third at the Giro al Sas in Trento and set career best times of 7:43.24 in the 3000m and 13:18.17 in the 5000m.
Chelimo, the younger brother of 2018 Cinque Mulini winner Jacob Kiplimo, won bronze in the same Arhus race and took bronze in the 3000m at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. The 18-year-old Ugandan clocked 7:44.82 in the 3000m and 13:20.10 in the 5000m.
Bett won the world U20 steeplechase title in 2018 and went on to finish fourth in the U20 race in Aarhus. He set his 3000m steeplechase lifetime best of 8:08.61 in Doha last May.
Burundi&rsquo;s Thierry Ndikumwenayo will fight for another top-three placing after winning in Alcobendas on 24 November and finishing second in Soria one week earlier. The 22-year-old trains with Italy&rsquo;s Yemaneberhan Crippa under the guidance of Italian coach Massimo Pegoretti.
Morocco&rsquo;s 1500m specialist Abdelati Iguider will test his shape over a longer distance with the aim to continue the proud Moroccan tradition in San Vittore Olona, which started with the wins of Khalid Skah in 1991 and Salah Hissou in 1999 and the runner-up finish by Soufian El Bakkali in 2017. Iguider won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.
Another interesting entrant is Kenya&rsquo;s Jackson Muema, who won the cross country race at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
Crippa will carry Italian hopes for a top-three placing after finishing fourth for the second consecutive year at the Campaccio Cross Country race on 6 January. During a successful 2019 season Crippa finished eighth in the 10,000m at the World Championships clocking 27:10.76 to break the national record. Last December he won European Cross Country bronze after winning the U20 race in 2014 and 2015 and finishing third in the U23 race in 2016 and 2017. Crippa trained for three weeks in Monte Gordo in Portugal in preparation for the Cinque Mulini and will be aiming to become the first Italian to reach the podium since Stefano Baldini in 2005.
The Italian line-up is completed by Yohanes Chiappinelli, the European 3000m steeplechase bronze medallist in 2018, Cesare Maestri, silver medallist at the 2019 World Mountain Running Championships and winner at last week&rsquo;s Vallagarina Cross Country race in Rovereto, and Italian 5000m champion Marouan Razine, who finished sixth at the Campaccio this year.
<h3>Yavi targetting successful defence</h3>
Yavi will return to San Vittore Olona to defend the title she won last year in snowy conditions. The 20-year-old went on to finish fourth in the 3000m steeplechase at the World Championships after improving her lifetime best to 9:10.74 in Monaco.
Kenyan hopes will be carried by Mercy Cherono, world silver medallist in the 5000m in Moscow 2013, and Gloria Kite, who finished third in the 2019 Cinque Mulini and in the 2020 Campaccio and set her 3000m PB with 8:29.91 in Doha last May.
The women&rsquo;s race will be also highlighted by 20-year-old Kenyan Jackline Jerono, who won two recent cross country races in Allonnes and Le Mans, France, and Jasmijn Bakker from the Netherlands, who was fourth in the U23 race at last month&rsquo;s European Championships.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Rising Italian middle distance star Nadia Battocletti will aim to continue her successful season after claiming her second European Cross Country U20 title and finishing sixth at the Campaccio. The daughter of former distance runner Giuliano Battocletti won the European U20 silver medal in the 5000m last year.
Other Italian runners in the field are world U20 mountain running champion Angela Mattevi and Valeria Roffino, who finished 11th at the European Cross Country Championships.
<h3>First World Athletics Heritage Plaque to be presented</h3>
The weekend also includes a ceremony during which organisers of the Cinque Mulini will be presented with the World Athletics Heritage Plaque. The presentation, which will take place at 11:45 before the start of the women&rsquo;s senior race, will mark the first time that a Heritage Plaque will be unveiled.&nbsp;
Since the programme was launched and a public competition was opened to design the plaque in December 2018, 54 plaques have been rewarded. World Athletics Heritage Director Chris Turner and World Athletics Road Running Manager Alessio Punzi will be on hand for the ceremony.
A milestone will also be celebrated as the women&rsquo;s race will mark its 50th anniversary. To mark this important milestone edition, organisers invited past Italian stars Paola Pigni and Nadia Dandolo to the official press conference last Tuesday in Milan. Pigni enjoyed one of her best seasons in 1973, when she won the Cinque Mulini and the world cross country title. Dandolo won the 1990 Cinque Mulini beating Ethiopia&rsquo;s Derartu Tulu.

Roger Bannister and Diane Leather Charles, who respectively became the first man to run the mile in under four minutes and the first woman to break the five-minute barrier for the distance, were among the honourees at the &lsquo;World Athletics Heritage Mile Night&rsquo; in Monaco on Thursday (21).
The event, hosted by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, brought together more than a dozen of history&rsquo;s greatest milers, including eight of the last 10 living men&rsquo;s outdoor world record holders.
Bannister and Leather Charles, who both achieved their barrier-breaking performances in May 1954, were recognised in the posthumous &lsquo;Legend&rsquo; category. Bannister&rsquo;s daughters, Erin Bannister-Townsend and Charlotte Bannister-Parker, and Leather Charles&rsquo;s daughter, Lindsey Armstrong, attended the event to accept the awards on their parents&rsquo; behalf.
During the celebration, Coe also announced eight recipients of the World Athletics Heritage Plaque, six of which were related to the mile.
The World Athletics Heritage Plaque is a location-based recognition which highlights, celebrates and links together iconic and historic athletics competitions, careers, performances, cities, venues, landmarks and culture around the world. The plaque is awarded for an outstanding contribution to the worldwide history and development of athletics.
Four world famous mile races and their host meetings were recognised in the &lsquo;Competition&rsquo; category.
The UK&rsquo;s Emsley Carr Mile (various venues) was founded in 1953 in the memory of Sir William Carr, a former editor of the News of the World, to help inspire a successful sub-4 mile attempt. Hicham El Guerrouj&rsquo;s 3:45.96 run in 2000 is the current race record.
New York&rsquo;s Millrose Games (1908) is the world&rsquo;s oldest indoor meeting. Millrose&rsquo;s headline event is the Wanamaker Mile (1926) which has seen six wins by Glenn Cunningham in the 1930s, seven by Eamonn Coghlan in the 1970s and 1980s and eight by Bernard Lagat in the 2000s.
The Oslo Bislett Games was founded in 1924 but its modern history began under Arne Haukvik&rsquo;s direction in 1965. Its marquee attraction is the Dream Mile (1976) which has seen three world records, one each from Britain&rsquo;s Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram.
Eugene&rsquo;s Prefontaine Classic (1975) and the Bowerman Mile (1975) was recognised in two categories, &lsquo;Competition&rsquo; and &lsquo;Legend&rsquo;, given its history has been successfully driven by the memory of Oregon&rsquo;s 24-year-old Steve Prefontaine who died in a car crash in 1975.
The seventh plaque recipient was Brussels&rsquo; Memorial Van Damme (1977) which was also honoured across the categories of &lsquo;Competition&rsquo; and &lsquo;Legend&rsquo; for equally tragic reasons. The meeting was created to honour the memory of Belgium&rsquo;s 22-year-old Ivo Van Damme, whose life was lost in a car crash in December 1976, just months&rsquo; after he won 800m and 1500m silver medals at the Montreal Olympic Games.
The eighth plaque recognised the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe, Germany. Established in 1985, two of the current women&rsquo;s world indoor records were set in the southeastern German city, Genzebe Dibaba at 1500m in 2014 and Susanna Kallur at 60m hurdles in 2008.

Spanish cross country races in Elgoibar and San Sebastian have each been awarded World Athletics Heritage Plaque in recognition of their historic status and contribution to the sport.
The announcements were made at ceremonies on Monday (4) in the town halls of Elgoibar and San Sebastian, which are approximately 40 kilometres apart, by World Athletics Council Member Anna Riccardi on behalf of World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.
The Elgoibar meeting &ndash; the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza &ndash; started in 1943 and was initially a domestic male-only event but invited international runners for the first time on its 20th anniversary (the race was not held in 1950) in 1963, with Ethiopian icon Mamo Wolde taking the first of his four victories.
Wolde&rsquo;s final victory came in in 1968, a year which saw him go on to take the Olympic marathon title in Mexico City.
A women&rsquo;s race was held for the first time in 1967 and it became part of the annual programme in 1972.
Winners in Elgoibar include myriad Olympic and world champions and some notable men&rsquo;s names include Portugal&rsquo;s Carlos Lopes, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Kenenisa Bekele, Uganda&rsquo;s Joshua Cheptegei and Kenyans Paul Tergat, Sammy Kipketer and Charles Kamathi. On the women&rsquo;s side, the winners have included Portugal&rsquo;s Fernanda Ribiero, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Derartu Tulu and Kenya&rsquo;s Sally Barsosio and Hellen Obiri, the latter winning at the latest edition in January before going on to retain her world 5000m title last month.
<h3>Haro the Elgoibar hero</h3>
Spain&rsquo;s three-time world cross-country silver medallist Mariano Haro is the most prolific winner in Elgoibar, having won five times in the 1970s.
The race, part of the World Cross Country Permit series, is named after multiple Spanish champion Juan Muguerza, who won titles over diverse distances from the 110m hurdles to the 5000m but was killed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.
In the race&rsquo;s early years, winners were given a hunting rifle as a prize. &ldquo;But the race switched over to prize money once we started to have international fields. There is a story, I&rsquo;m not completely sure whether it&rsquo;s true, that Wolde was given a rifle but had problems taking it on the plane. Prize money and less dangerous gifts was instituted no long after that,&rdquo; said current race organiser Zigor Diez.
The Cross Internacional de San Sebasti&aacute;n, also known as the Cross Internacional de Donostia, was inaugurated in 1956 and quickly became a popular destination for the world&rsquo;s leading runners to test their mettle with early winners in the 1950s including Olympic champions Emil Zatopek and Alain Mimoun.
<h3>Five cross country meetings</h3>
Among the more recent winners is Ethiopia&rsquo;s Haile Gebrselassie while Spain&rsquo;s two-time world cross-country champion Carmen Valero won the women&rsquo;s race on four consecutive occasions between 1974-77 and Portugal&rsquo;s Rosa Mota was a three-time winner in the early 1980s before going on to take Olympic and world marathon titles.
The two Basque races become just the fourth and fifth cross country races to be honoured with a Plaque, joining the English and US Cross Country Championships and Italy&rsquo;s Cinque Mulini race.
&ldquo;On behalf of the race and the city, it&rsquo;s an honour to be added to this illustrious list,&rdquo; said San Sebastian mayor Eneko Goia.

The announcements were made on the opening day of the second International Athletics Film Festival (FICA), which is being held in San Sebastian.
The festival continues until Saturday and as well as out-of-competition screenings includes two separate competitions: an open section for films &ndash; including short films, documentaries and animated shorts &ndash; already released and in the public domain as well as a special film competition created by the World Athletics Heritage and broadcast departments in partnership with the FICA festival to give the opportunity to young filmmakers around the world, regardless of experience but under the age of 23, to show their talent. The second &ndash; age-restricted &ndash; competition invited entries of short athletics-themed films which had to be no longer than two minutes and shot on mobile phones or tablets.
The winner of this competition will receive a FICA Achilles trophy and an all-expenses-paid six-day trip for two people to the World U20 Championships in Nairobi next year.

The World Athletics Heritage Plaque has been awarded posthumously to six world renowned coaches and to seven of the sport&rsquo;s oldest magazines in recognition of their historic contribution to the promotion of Athletics, IAAF President Sebastian Coe announced at this evening&rsquo;s IAAF/LOC press conference at Khalifa Stadium ahead of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019.
The coaches honoured include Dr. Woldemeskel Kostre (Haile Gebrselassie), Yoshio Koide (Naoko Takahashi), Arthur Lydiard (Peter Snell), Franz Stampfl (Roger Bannister), Lawrence &lsquo;Larry&rsquo; Snyder (Jesse Owens) and Dietrich Gerner (Adhemar Ferreira Da Silva) who mentored and moulded countless athletics talents into champions and world record breakers during their illustrious careers.
Middle distance legends Roger Bannister, Chris Brasher, Peter Snell, Ralph Doubell, Mal Whitfield and Christopher Chataway, distance greats Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Hiromi Suzuki, Naoko Takahashi and Murray Halberg, jumper Adhemar Ferreira Da Silva, hurdler Glenn Davis and athlete of the century Jesse Owens, are among the long list of world beating talent nurtured by the six coaches honoured today.
The Area Associations and Member Federations will now work together to find appropriate public locations at which to permanently display the six plaques.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe announced 11 new locations for the IAAF World Athletics Heritage Plaque at tonight&rsquo;s IAAF / LOC Dinner on the eve of the IAAF World Relays Yokohama 2019.
The new locations in the categories of &lsquo;Competition&rsquo; and &lsquo;Landmark&rsquo; are <a href="https://www.iaaf.org/heritage/plaque-locations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spread across the IAAF&rsquo;s six continental areas</a>.

<h3>'Permanent reminders of outstanding historic athletic achievement'</h3>
&ldquo;The eleven recipients we honour tonight have each made an enormous impact in the historical development of the sport of athletics in their countries and beyond,&rdquo; said Sebastian Coe. &ldquo;We launched this new award last December and a public competition has since designed the plaque. Next year we will begin to unveil the plaques, permanent reminders of outstanding historic athletic achievement, in prominent locations around the world.&rdquo;
Appropriately, given the reason for the dinner, two of the 11 plaques awarded were to relay events. The Penn Relays (USA), established in 1895, is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, while the Hakone Ekiden (JPN) founded in 1920, is the world&rsquo;s oldest ekiden marathon relay.
<h3>Ethiopian and Kenyan &lsquo;Landmarks&rsquo;</h3>
While nine of the locations announced were in the category of &lsquo;Competition&rsquo;, for the first time Coe announced recipients in the category of &lsquo;Landmark&rsquo;. Two famous centres of distance running in Africa were honoured. These were the Ethiopian town of Bekoji, &lsquo;Town of Runners&rsquo;, and Iten in Kenya, the &lsquo;Home of Champions&rsquo;.
<h3>Sao Paulo&rsquo;s double honour</h3>
Hakone was not the only road race honoured, with the Seoul Marathon, Korea (founded 1931), the third oldest road race in Asia, and the Saint Silvester S&atilde;o Paulo, Brazil (founded 1925), the world&rsquo;s most famous New Year&rsquo;s race, also recognised. S&atilde;o Paulo becomes the first city to receive two plaques following last December&rsquo;s award to the Centro Esportivo e de Lazer Tiet&ecirc; in the city thanks to its association with the double Olympic champion Adhemar da Silva.
<h3>Combined events excellence</h3>
The world&rsquo;s leading combined events meetings, D&eacute;castar Talence, France (founded 1976) and Hypo Meeting G&ouml;tzis, Austria (founded 1975), were similarly recognised for their extraordinary contribution to and unique place in the development and promotion of the heptathlon and decathlon events.
<h3>Historic handicap race and two European invitational meets</h3>
Three track and field meetings were also recognised. The oldest was the Stawell Gift, Victoria, Australia (founded 1878) which includes one of the world&rsquo;s most historic foot races &ndash; a 120-metre race run on grass, with runners handicapped according to form.
The Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) in Berlin, Germany, established in 1921, is the world&rsquo;s oldest invitational one-day meeting, and the Weltklasse Z&uuml;rich (founded 1928), known originally as the &lsquo;Nurmi&rsquo; meeting and more recently dubbed the &lsquo;Olympics in one day&rsquo;, were honoured from their contribution to world track and field history.

The Plaque is a location-based recognition which highlights, celebrates and links together iconic and historic athletics careers, cities, competitions, culture, landmarks, performances and venues around the world.
A uniquely designed plaque will be permanently and publicly displayed at a location closely associated with each recipient.

While attending the 48th edition of the CARIFTA Games in the Cayman Islands (20-22 April), IAAF President Sebastian Coe confirmed the latest recipients of the IAAF World Athletics Heritage Plaque.
&ldquo;I am delighted to announce the award of the IAAF World Athletics Heritage Plaque to two internationally famous youth and junior competitions in the NACAC area,&rdquo; confirmed Seb Coe. &ldquo;They are the Inter-Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Championships, Jamaica and the CARIFTA Games.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Many congratulations to the Jamaican Schools and CARIFTA Games, your historic contribution to the development of athletics is unquestionable,&rdquo; concluded Coe.
Known affectionately as &lsquo;Champs&rsquo;, the Jamaican high school championships were founded in 1910. The annual competition has provided a production line of athletics talent from Arthur Wint and Herb McKenley to Donald Quarrie and Merlene Ottey and of course Usain Bolt.
The recipient will be the organisers, Jamaica&rsquo;s Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association.
The second competition which will receive the recognition of a plaque is the CARIFTA Games. Founded in 1972, the games were inaugurated by Austin Sealy, then president of the Amateur Athletic Association of Barbados.
Like &lsquo;Champs&rsquo; in Jamaica, CARIFTA has become a conveyor belt of talent for the entire Caribbean region. It was from CARIFTA that &lsquo;Lightning Bolt&rsquo; first emerged on the international stage. More recently global champions Kirani James and Shaunae Miller-Uibo have become the latest in the long line of champions produced.
The recipient will be the IAAF area association, NACAC.
