Josh Kerr, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Yared Nuguse will clash in the Bowerman Mile when they race at the Prefontaine Classic – this season’s fifth Wanda Diamond League meeting – in Eugene on 25 May.
Britain’s Kerr pipped Norway’s Ingebrigtsen at the World Athletics Championships in August, clocking 3:29.38 to claim his first global crown.
The 26-year-old went on to win the world indoor 3000m title in Glasgow earlier this month, running 7:42.98 to deny USA’s Nuguse who got silver in 7:43.59.
“Confirmed! I will be opening up my outdoor mile season at #preclassic,” Kerr wrote on Instagram.
“Been flirting around with other distances, time to get back to what I’m the best in the world at.”
The last time the trio clashed was at the World Championships in Budapest, when Nuguse finished fifth behind gold and silver medallists Kerr and Ingebrigtsen.
Kerr and Ingebrigtsen have never raced each other over the mile, while Ingebrigtsen and Nuguse finished one-two in last year’s Bowerman Mile – Olympic champion Ingebrigtsen winning in 3:43.73 for a European record and the third-fastest time in history. Nuguse set a North American record of 3:43.97 in second place – No.4 all time.
Ingebrigtsen returns to the Prefontaine Classic for the seventh time to defend that Bowerman Mile title, which also earned him the Diamond League trophy last year.
