The top four from the Olympic final – Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, Yared Nuguse and Jakob Ingebrigtsen – will clash in a 1500m rematch at the Weltklasse Zurich, the penultimate Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season, on 5 September.

While much of the talk in the lead-up had been on the head-to-head between Ingebrigtsen and Kerr, it was USA’s Hocker who strode to victory in Paris, setting an Olympic and North American record of 3:27.65 to become the seventh-fastest 1500m runner in history.

Kerr followed in a British record of 3:27.79, while Nuguse got bronze ahead of Ingebrigtsen – 3:27.80 to 3:28.24.

Between them, they fill four of the top nine spots on the world all-time list, with Ingebrigtsen having run 3:26.73 in Monaco in July.

Like that race in Monaco, and unlike the Olympic final, the Zurich 1500m will feature pacemakers and wavelight technology.

Ingebrigtsen has claimed two Diamond League 1500m wins so far this season, in Monaco and Oslo, while Kerr won the mile in Eugene.

Mondo Duplantis is another Olympic champion who will hope to put on a show in Zurich.

Duplantis improved his own world pole vault record to 6.25m to retain his title in Paris and will have the chance to go for a fourth consecutive Diamond League title at the final in Brussels.

In Zurich he’ll be joined by Olympic silver medallist Sam Kendricks, plus Chris Nilsen, Ernest John Obiena and Thibaut Collet, who all sit towards the top of the 2024 world list behind Duplantis.

The field will also feature 2012 Olympic champion and former world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie.

The list of athletes already announced for Zurich includes world record-holders and Olympic champions Grant Holloway, Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Ryan Crouser.
