World Athletics recognises and emphasises the essential role of journalists. During the World Athletics U20 Championships Lima 24, 12 young reporters participated in the Media Development Programme (MDP), an immersive experience in collaboration with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) designed to develop journalists specialising in athletics.
This unique programme combined intensive theoretical and practical training, transforming the reporters&rsquo; perspectives on the sport and adding valuable expertise to their careers. Journalists from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela came together at the Estadio Atletico la Videna &ndash; venue for the World U20 Championships &ndash; and engaged in extensive and enriching sessions with presentations, examples and discussions, all while enjoying a privileged view of the track.&nbsp;
Martin Mazur, a freelance Argentinian journalist with more than 25 years of experience, served as the programme&rsquo;s mentor. Regularly contributing to publications such as El Grafico, FourFourTwo, La Gazzetta dello Sport and The Players&rsquo; Tribune, Mazur is also the director of the AIPS Sport Media Awards, organised by the International Sports Press Association.
"Focusing on details, capturing a good story before it slips away, and honing observation skills are some key lessons I took from Martin's sessions," said Alondra Naupari, one of the two reporters from Peru. From pitching stories to understanding the importance of reputation and accuracy in reporting, the programme functioned like a real newsroom for the participants.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Some of these young journalists were naturally more experienced than others or specialised in specific areas, such as video, photography or print journalism, so we started from scratch with a modular programme. This approach helped them to grow both as a group and individually, stepping out of their comfort zones,&rdquo; explained Mazur.
For Franco Lomez, from Uruguay, this was a fantastic opportunity. &ldquo;In journalism, learning is an ongoing journey, and not everyone has the chance to gain insights from leading experts in different areas of the field. Working with Martin enriched us as young reporters and sparked our curiosity to explore other branches of sports journalism.&rdquo;
<h2>Rules</h2>
An in-depth understanding of the rules of athletics was essential for reporting at the World U20 Championships. Luca Verrascina, Senior Competition Manager at World Athletics, provided key insights during a tour of the athletics track.
&ldquo;It was a very interactive experience. I had the chance to ask about everything that caught my attention, and Luca provided personalised answers. Seeing up close the equipment used to measure time, speed and sensors made complex aspects of athletics much easier to grasp,&rdquo; said Manuela Santos, from Ecuador.
<h2>Calendars</h2>
World Athletics hosts several major events throughout the year, including the Diamond League and World Championships at both senior and U20 levels, with more exciting competitions on the horizon. Through the efforts of Zacharias Vailakis, Head of Media Operations at World Athletics, the young reporters learned what it takes to organise such large-scale events. "The number of athletes participating is incredible. Athletics is so much more than just individual or speed events," remarked Lucas Nazrala, from Bolivia.
<h2>Flash quotes</h2>
Preparation for flash quotes, an essential task for sports reporters, was a highlight of the programme. Press Delegate Antonio Carvalho guided the group through the importance of gathering relevant information and handling interviews with athletes.
&ldquo;The sessions helped me to identify key information from quotes and ask insightful questions. To do that, it&rsquo;s crucial to understand the profile of the interviewee, something Antonio covered thoroughly,&rdquo; said Vanessa Galvan from Venezuela.
Peruvian journalist Jose Rivasplata added: &ldquo;One of the most valuable lessons was understanding how to approach athletes with respect. If they don't wish to speak, they are only required to pass through the mixed zone. Recognising that athletes are people like us was a central message during the flash quotes training.&rdquo;

<h2>Digital and social media</h2>
The significance of social media was also emphasised during the programme. Laura Arcoleo, Social Media Manager at World Athletics, shared her expertise on how technology and social platforms have transformed communication in the sport.
&ldquo;Laura's class was eye-opening, particularly seeing the impact of social media on the growth of athletes and the evolution of the federation. It was a fascinating study,&rdquo; said Itzel Luna from Panama.
Michelle Sammet and Jessica Whittington, from the Communications team at World Athletics, spoke to the young reporters about the work behind compiling statistics and presenting them on global platforms like the World Athletics website.
&ldquo;Listening to Michelle gave me a new perspective on the importance of digital communication in the growth of athletes and organisations. Optimising resources and creating opportunities,&rdquo; said Leonardo Hidalgo, from Ecuador.
Jon Ridgeon, CEO of World Athletics, also shared his insights during a half-hour interview with the reporters before the start of the championships.
"It was a great opportunity to speak with Jon about athletics and his career. His advice to love what we do and be passionate about our profession was especially meaningful,&rdquo; said Mariana Primero, from Colombia.
<h2>Emotional experience</h2>
The greatest honour for any athlete is to represent their country, but sometimes it doesn't happen due to political conflict. In Lima, young reporters Vanessa Galvan and Rodrigo D&rsquo;Angelo had the opportunity to listen to and speak with members of the Athlete Refugee Team.
&ldquo;As a Venezuelan migrant, I feel very grateful to have had the chance to meet the refugee delegation, their coaches, the leaders behind this initiative, and to gain a deeper understanding of the impact World Athletics has had on the lives of these young athletes. I believe this kind of initiative should continue to be replicated,&rdquo; said Galvan.
D&rsquo;Angelo added: &ldquo;Sport has the power to help people facing different adversities. One of the most serious challenges is having to escape from your country just to survive, knowing your life could end at any moment. In the face of such extreme fear and cruelty, sport becomes a ray of hope. That&rsquo;s exactly what the World Athletics Refugee Team represents.&rdquo;
<h2>Broadcasting</h2>
Broadcasting was another key topic, led by Joris Wauman, who explained the intricate work behind televising events like the World U20 Championships.
"We learned how many cameras and specialised technicians are required to broadcast athletics to our screens, whether it&rsquo;s on TV, laptops, or smartphones,&rdquo; noted Rodrigo D'Angelo from Argentina.
<h2>Certificates</h2>
The intensive programme ran from 9am to 9pm, marking a turning point in the careers of the young reporters. After 10 days of challenges, they left with a new perspective on athletics journalism.
The culmination of their hard work was celebrated with the presentation of certificates by Helio Marinho Gesta de Melo, president of Atletismo Sudamericano.
"It was a special moment to receive the certificate from Helio. Athletics in South America is growing, and I thank World Athletics for recognising our region by hosting significant events like the World U20 Championships in Lima," said Sebastian Lasquera from Argentina.
Mazur concluded: &ldquo;On the first day, we made an oath: it was not important how much we knew about athletics, but how eager we were to tell stories. Knowing all the activities that World Athletics had prepared, I assured them that by the end of the programme, they would not only know much more but also have stronger tools to tell these relevant stories. And they&rsquo;ve achieved that.&rdquo;
Participants capped off their experience with a group photo on the track. It was the result of hard work, intense training and dedication &mdash; just like athletes with their medals.
&ldquo;Since launching our Young Reporters Programme in 2011, the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) has been committed to nurturing the next generation of journalists through seminars in collaboration with top federations across the five continents,&rdquo; said AIPS President Gianni Merlo. &ldquo;At AIPS, we strongly believe that sport is culture, and independent journalism is essential to safeguard it against issues like match-fixing, doping and corruption.&nbsp;
&ldquo;In a time when many media outlets face challenges, the opportunity to learn directly in the field makes a significant difference for young journalists, enabling them to develop their own sources and grow quickly. That's why I liken our programmes to a master&rsquo;s degree. This year, for this collaboration with World Athletics, we&rsquo;ve demonstrated the power of AIPS and its vast network of 161 national associations, along with the record participation in the AIPS Sport Media Awards, which helped us select the most suitable young reporters with a keen interest in athletics, to receive a unique learning experience from our mentors, Riccardo Romani and Martin Mazur, in Glasgow, Xiamen and Lima.&rdquo;

Media Development Programme paves the way for young reporters in Lima

It was a memorable year for the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series of meetings, which saw 25 of the individual gold medallists from the Paris Olympic Games competing and delivering some outstanding moments of the 2024 track and field season.
The series concluded at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb, Croatia, on 6-8 September and spanned 11 meetings across 10 host nations since the first meeting 6 months and 23 days earlier at the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/continental-tour-gold-melbourne-maurie-plant-meet-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne</a>, Australia, on 15 February.
At the Antipodean opener, New Zealand&rsquo;s Hamish Kerr won the men&rsquo;s high jump in with a modest 2.25m, but laid the foundations for a dream season which included world indoor gold gleaned in Glasgow in March, topped by the Olympic gold in Paris in August.

 The series moved on to the African continent for its second stop, with the hosting of the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/kip-keino-classic-nairobi-2024-katzberg-moraa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi</a>, Kenya, on 20 April. Canada&rsquo;s Ethan Katzberg landed a North American record of 84.38m in the men&rsquo;s hammer, making a clear statement of intent for the year ahead.
Nairobi also witnessed USA&rsquo;s Courtney Lindsey and Botswana&rsquo;s Letsile Tobogo having a thrilling duel in the men&rsquo;s 200m. Both were clocked at 19.71 (-1.5m/s) and the US sprinter just got the nod from the photo finish.
The tour headed to the USA with the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/los-angeles-grand-prix-2024-benjamin-mclaughlin-levrone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix</a> on 17-18 May and offered a preview into what was to come in Paris in the 400m hurdles disciplines. Men&rsquo;s champion Rai Benjamin ran a world-class 46.64 in his first 400m hurdles race of the year and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone clocked a searing 22.07 to win the women&rsquo;s 200m (-0.3m/s).

 A day later, Tokyo in Japan played host with the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/davies-5000m-meeting-record-seiko-golden-grand-prix-tokyo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seiko Golden Grand Prix</a>. Home heroine Haruka Kitaguchi thrilled the crowd with a sixth-round victory with 63.45m, setting the tone for a year that saw her add Olympic gold to world gold from Budapest.
At the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/golden-spike-2024-ostrava-duplantis-caudery-de-grasse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ostrava Golden Spike in Czechia</a> on 28 May, wind and rain greeted a world class field. It didn&rsquo;t deter Mondo Duplantis from another world record attempt, failing at 6.25m after safely banking victory with 6.00m.
At the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/usatf-new-york-grand-prix-2024-mclaughlin-levrone-lyles-davis-woodhall" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USATF New York City Grand Prix</a> in USA on 8-9 June, Noah Lyles made his season debut at 200m with a stunning 19.77 (-1.6 m/s) and in the field, Tara Davis-Woodall won the women&rsquo;s long jump with 7.14m (0.9m/s) in a demonstration of the seven-metre form that would ultimately land her Olympic gold.

 The next Continental Tour Gold meeting was the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/paavo-nurmi-games-turku-2024-jacobs-mcleod-ali-chopra" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku</a>, Finland, on 18 June and some of the world&rsquo;s leading throwers started to find their groove. Canada&rsquo;s Camryn Rogers made her first appearance of the year in Europe and won with 73.36m.
Two days later the tour landed in Bydgoszcz, Poland, for the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/fabbri-hailu-kaczmarek-bydgoszcz-szewinska-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Irena Szewinska Memorial</a>. Home star Natalia Kaczmarek lined up in the women&rsquo;s 400m at a meeting named in honour of the 1976 Olympic champion whose 48-year-old Polish record Kaczmarek had taken just eight days earlier at the European Championships in Rome.
Much to the delight of the crowd, she won in a meeting record of 49.86 from 2019 world champion Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain.
Next up, there was Dutch delight at the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/schilder-laros-hassan-bol-hengelo-fbk-games-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FBK Games in Hengelo</a>, Netherlands, on 6-7 July. There, 19-year-old prodigy Niels Laros thrilled the crowd with victory in the men&rsquo;s 1000m in a world U20 record of 2:14.37. Compatriot Jessica Schilder delivered her best performance of the season, landing a national record 20.33m to win the women&rsquo;s shot.

 At the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/alfred-katzberg-fabbri-jackson-gyulai-memorial-2024-szekesfehervar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gyulai Istvan Memorial</a> on 9 July in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, athletes limbered up at a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting for the last time before the Paris Olympics.&nbsp;
Julien Alfred won a dramatic 200m in 22.16 (0.6m/s) as two-time world champion Shericka Jackson pulled up injured. Alfred went on to win 100m gold and 200m silver in Paris and Jackson&rsquo;s season came to a premature halt.
In what was a recurring theme of the season, Miltiadis Tentoglou got the better of emerging Italian Mattia Furlani in the men&rsquo;s long jump with 8.23m (-0.6m/s).
The last meeting of the year came at the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/zagreb-boris-hanzekovic-memorial-2024-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb</a>, Croatia, on 6-8 September and it delivered drama aplenty in the throws.

 Having added a third successive Olympic men&rsquo;s shot title in Paris, Ryan Crouser was in inspired form competing in the Ivan Ivancic Memorial at the Zagreb Fountains on the eve of the main track and field meeting. He landed a season&rsquo;s best and meeting record of 22.93m.
In the men&rsquo;s hammer, Olympic champion Katzberg tasted defeat for the first time in 2024 as Ukraine&rsquo;s Olympic bronze medallist Mykhaylo Kokhan unleashed a personal best of 81.14m to win.

Highlights from the 2024 Continental Tour Gold season

Legendary pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis and high jump superstar Yaroslava Mahuchikh &ndash; both of whom have broken world records and won Olympic gold this year &ndash; will be aiming to end their season on a high when they compete on the first day of the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on Friday (13).
The first 16 of the 32 Diamond disciplines will be contested on the first day of action at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, while the rest will take place on Saturday in the Belgian capital.
A combined total of 82 medals &ndash; 25 of them gold &ndash; were won by Brussels-bound athletes at the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and Duplantis and Mahuchikh will feature among the five disciplines that have the full complement of podium finishers.
World and Olympic champion Duplantis has already set three world records this year &ndash; one of them coming at the Olympic Games, plus one before and one after, his latest being a 6.26m vault in Silesia.
It was at the Diamond League Final last year where Duplantis set the seventh world record of his career, clearing 6.23m. If an 11th world record is out of reach this weekend, he may take aim at the meeting record of 6.10m he set last year.
Regardless, as a minimum he will want to complete his undefeated streak for 2024, and he&rsquo;ll once again be up against the men who joined him on the podium in Paris &ndash; USA&rsquo;s Sam Kendricks and Greece&rsquo;s Emmanouil Karalis &ndash; as well as USA&rsquo;s six-metre vaulters Chris Nilsen and KC Lightfoot.
All four women who stood on the high jump podium in Paris &ndash; Mahuchikh, silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers and joint bronze medallists Eleanor Patterson and Iryna Gerashchenko &ndash; will renew their rivalry in Brussels.
Mahuchikh has been undefeated outdoors this year. The Ukrainian&rsquo;s winning streak includes the 2.10m world record she set at the Diamond League meeting in Paris in July. Since winning Olympic gold in the French capital, Mahuchikh went on to win in Lausanne and Zurich.

European silver medallist Angelina Topic will also be in Brussels. The teenager was forced to miss the Olympic final through injury, but she returned to action at the end of the month to win the world U20 title in Lima.
The women&rsquo;s discus, women&rsquo;s shot put and men&rsquo;s long jump will all feature full Paris podium reunions.
Olympic discus champion Valarie Allman takes on 2022 world champion Feng Bin and multiple global gold medallist Sandra Elkasevic, as well as world leader Yaime Perez.
In the shot put, surprise Olympic medallists Yemisi Ogunleye, Maddison-Lee Wesche and Song Jiayuan will take on two-time world champion Chase Jackson and world indoor champion Sarah Mitton.
Meanwhile, Olympic long jump champion Miltiadis Tentoglou will look to avenge his recent defeat to Olympic silver medallist Wayne Pinnock in Zurich. They&rsquo;ll be joined by Olympic bronze medallist Mattia Furlani, world indoor heptathlon champion Simon Ehammer and world indoor bronze medallist Carey McLeod.
<h2>Paulino, McLaughlin-Levrone and Alfred set to star in sprints</h2>
Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino hasn&rsquo;t lost a 400m race since July last year and she&rsquo;ll aim to extend that streak in Brussels as she takes on 2019 world champion Salwa Eid Naser, Irish record-holder Rhasidat Adeleke, world indoor silver medallist Lieke Klaver and world bronze medallist Sada Williams.

Two-time Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will also contest the 400m in Brussels, but she&rsquo;ll be in a pre-programme invitational race as she hasn&rsquo;t earned any Diamond League points this season. She has stated that her goal is to improve on her PB of 48.74; if she achieves that, she could also end up taking down the US record of 48.70.
In the women&rsquo;s 100m, Olympic champion Julien Alfred will clash with world champion Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson. While Alfred triumphed in Paris, the latter came out on top recently in Zurich. Dina Asher-Smith and Marie Josee Ta Lou-Smith were a close third and fourth in that race, and they&rsquo;ll also be back in action in Brussels.
In the men&rsquo;s sprints, Olympic silver medallist and European record-holder Matthew Hudson-Smith faces Olympic bronze medallist Muzala Samukonga and 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James in the 400m. Botswana&rsquo;s Bayapo Ndori and Britain&rsquo;s Charlie Dobson add further depth to the field.
And in the men&rsquo;s 100m, 2022 world champion Fred Kerley takes on world indoor champion Christian Coleman, South Africa&rsquo;s Akani Simbine and world indoor bronze medallist Ackeem Blake.
<h2>1500m showdown take four</h2>
Three of the four leading protagonists in the men&rsquo;s 1500m will be back in action in Brussels for what could be another unpredictable clash.
USA&rsquo;s Cole Hocker was the surprise victor at the Olympics ahead of world champion Josh Kerr as Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished outside of the medals. Ingebrigtsen, who won the Olympic 5000m title, went on to win the 1500m in Lausanne, then broke the world 3000m record three days later, but in Zurich last week it was USA&rsquo;s Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse who came out on top.

Hocker, Nuguse and Ingebrigtsen are all in Brussels for the final big 1500m showdown of the year.
Olympic steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali has had a relatively quiet season to date, even by his standards, with just three competitions to his name. The Moroccan, who won in Silesia at the end of August, will start as favourite in Brussels as he takes on Olympic bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwot, Kenya&rsquo;s Amos Serem and Ethiopian duo Abrham Sime and Samuel Firewu.
Elsewhere on the track, world champion Mary Moraa stars in a women&rsquo;s 800m field that also includes Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Georgia Bell, her fellow Briton Jemma Reekie, and South Africa&rsquo;s Prudence Sekgodiso. In the men&rsquo;s 5000m, Olympic silver medallist Ronald Kwemoi takes on world leader Hagos Gebrhiwet, Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Berihu Aregawi, European 10,000m champion Dominic Lobalu, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Yomif Kejelcha and Kenyan pair Jacob Krop and Nicholas Kipkorir.
In the men&rsquo;s 110m hurdles, Olympic silver medallist Daniel Roberts takes on compatriot Freddie Crittenden, European champion Lorenzo Simonelli and France&rsquo;s Sasha Zhoya, winner in Zurich last week.
World record-holder Mykolas Alekna leads a discus field that also includes 2022 world champion Kristjan Ceh, Olympic bronze medallist Matthew Denny and world champion Daniel Stahl. The women&rsquo;s triple jump, meanwhile, features Olympic silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts, Olympic bronze medallist Jasmine Moore and world indoor silver medallist Leyanis Perez-Hernandez.

Earlier in the season, the 19-year-old had planned to be all-in on the decathlon in Lima, his specialist event where he holds the Croatian U20 record with 7300. But in Budapest in mid-July, Farkas was doing a warm-up for the long jump when he landed awkwardly in the sand, having over-rotated in the air. The pit wasn&rsquo;t evenly raked and his left arm came down on a raised lump of sand, the momentum of his body causing a dislocated shoulder.
He could see it jutting out as he took stock of the situation and so, there and then, he popped it back into place. &ldquo;Nobody ever imagined someone&rsquo;s shoulder would dislocate in the long jump,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;It was a bit painful, but I knew it couldn&rsquo;t stay in the front so I had to get it back in.&rdquo;
He had about six weeks until the World U20 Championships and Farkas had the entry standards for the decathlon, 200m, 400m, 110m hurdles and long jump. But given the damage to his shoulder, the decathlon was out of the question. He took two weeks of rest, then began easing back into light training.
He and his coach, Patrik Koscak, decided his best bet was to focus on the long jump, given his personal best of 7.72m put him in contention with the chief contenders. &ldquo;The long jump was the tightest of them all and we thought we had the biggest chance,&rdquo; he says.
Soon enough, he was back jumping off full run-ups, and in Lima his singular focus paid off in spectacular style. In the qualification round, Farkas soared to a Croatian U20 and U23 long jump record of 8.15m (0.6m/s), adding a whopping 43cm to his PB. In the final, aided by a 2.4m/s tailwind, he leapt 8.17m, the longest jump in the history of the championships. It handed him victory by 24cm over Serbia&rsquo;s Luka Boskovic.

Did he see those distances coming?
&ldquo;No,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Maybe my coach (did) because he knows the best of me. We thought maybe 7.80m, 7.90m, which would be enough for silver, but the 8.15m in qualification really stunned me. I wasn&rsquo;t expecting that even the slightest bit and 8.17m in the finals, I&rsquo;m really happy with that jump. I knew it was huge from the take-off board and it was a truly surreal feeling. I&rsquo;m still so stunned I won the gold.&rdquo;
For Farkas, it marked a huge staging post on a journey that began 13 years ago when he first took up athletics. In his childhood, he did sprints and long jump and after changing training groups in his teens and realising he was &ldquo;pretty good at everything&rdquo;, he started targeting the decathlon.
He grew up in Nedelisce in the north of Croatia and is currently based in Zagreb, studying kinesiology at university. In 2022, Farkas finished 11th at the European U18 Championships in the decathlon, scoring 6979, and earlier that summer he set a Croatian U18 record of 7120. He also competed over 100m and 200m at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.
Last year, he broke the Croatian U20 decathlon record with 7300 and his 2024 campaign started in flying fashion, Farkas twice breaking the Croatian U20 60m record indoors (6.74 and 6.71) and lowering the indoor 200m record to 21.09. Outdoors, he made his debut at the European Championships, clocking a Croatian senior 200m record of 20.70 in Rome. Across the summer, he smashed PBs in a variety of events.

Juggling the workload required for the decathlon with his studies is no easy task. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s really, really hard putting together 10 events in two days and especially the training that goes behind it,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;I feel there&rsquo;s no event like it in athletics. We do two, three, four events in one training session &ndash; it&rsquo;s a really hard process and not a lot of people make it.&rdquo;
When it comes to role models in the decathlon, he says &ldquo;there is only one answer: Kevin Mayer&rdquo; and Farkas has long wanted to emulate the Frenchman&rsquo;s achievements.
In Lima, he had his first realistic shot at a global title &ndash; just not in the event he was expecting. The qualification for the men&rsquo;s long jump was the same morning the decathlon began and the following evening, as he was competing in the long jump final, the decathlon denouement was playing out on track, Farkas cheering on many of his friends and rivals in the 1500m from the in-field.
His performance in Lima qualified him for the long jump at next year&rsquo;s European Indoor Championships, so Farkas will likely take to the runway there. When it comes to areas of improvement in the years ahead, he has a clear focus.
&ldquo;The second day (of the decathlon) is not my best,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;We have been working on the discus a lot; pole vault is not my strongpoint. The javelin is pretty good and the 1500m, we can&rsquo;t really train for that. But the discus and pole vault are the main things we need to focus on. It&rsquo;s a good thing they are technical disciplines and we can work on that really fast. I&rsquo;m hoping we can get that right for next season.&rdquo;
But with his leap into world-class territory in the long jump, while still a teenager, might he be tempted to leave the decathlon behind and focus on that in the years to come?
&ldquo;No, I don&rsquo;t think so,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;The decathlon is my first love and I&rsquo;m going to stick to it, definitely.&rdquo;

Surprise world U20 long jump champion Farkas switches focus back to decathlon

World 20km and 35km race walk champion &Aacute;lvaro Mart&iacute;n has announced his retirement from international athletics.
The 30-year-old Spaniard earned two Olympic medals in Paris last month, taking bronze in the 20km race walk before teaming up with fellow world champion Mar&iacute;a P&eacute;rez to capture gold in the marathon race walk mixed relay.
Born in the small village of Llerena (Badajoz), Mart&iacute;n moved to Madrid at the age of 16 to study and chase his athletics dreams. His race walking ability soon became apparent, and just two years later he made his Olympic debut in London in 2012 at the age of 18.
A highly consistent performer, Mart&iacute;n has competed in major championships every single season since then. He has competed at four Olympic Games, five World Championships and three European Championships.
After his DNF on his first Olympic appearance in London, he placed 22th in Rio in 2016 and fourth in Tokyo in 2021 before finally making it on to the podium in Paris. He made his World Championships debut in 2013, again while still an U20 athlete, and he placed 23rd. He then went on to finish 16th in Beijing in 2015, eighth in London in 2017 and seventh in Oregon before achieving his historic double triumph in Budapest in 2023.
Mart&iacute;n also boasts two European golds over the shorter distance, both achieved on German roads &ndash; Berlin in 2018 and Munich in 2022 &ndash; following his fifth-place finish in Zurich in 2014 when he was just 20.
Before then, he also earned championship medals in age-group categories, taking European U20 bronze in Rieti in 2013 and improving to European U23 silver in Tallinn in 2015.
He has a 20km lifetime best of 1:17:32, set in Budapest last year, and has broken the 1:20 barrier 10 times at that distance. He also has a 2:24:30 PB over 35km and has twice won the &lsquo;Gran Premio Cantones&rsquo; in La Coruna (2017 &amp; 2022), one of the most competitive race walking events on the circuit.
Mart&iacute;n, who holds degrees in political science and law, announced his decision to retire after receiving the highest honour of Extremadura, one of the autonomous communities/states of Spain on Saturday. Perez, his relay partner in Paris, presented his medal and Martin then addressed a packed audience with an emotional speech.
&ldquo;I doubt I was destined to become world or Olympic champion,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I deny having had ability or qualities above the rest, it has just been a matter of a lot of hard work, sacrifice and a bit of luck. Is winning the most important thing? definitely no; being able to influence the others is much more relevant and I have shown it&rsquo;s possible to reach the top from a small town and make athletics success and studies compatible, I hope I have paved a way for future generations.
&ldquo;Today I announce that the Paris Olympic Games was my last competition,&rdquo; added an emotional Martin, who thanked his family, partner and coach Jos&eacute; Antonio Carrillo for their unconditional support. &ldquo;I have mixed feelings of sadness and happiness but I want to retire at the top. It&rsquo;s now time for new challenges beyond athletics.&rdquo;

Britain&rsquo;s Josh Kerr broke the men&rsquo;s race record while USA&rsquo;s Karissa Schweizer equalled the women&rsquo;s to win at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile in New York on Sunday (8).
A month on from claiming Olympic 1500m silver in Paris, Kerr retained his 5th Avenue Mile title in 3:44.3, smashing the event record of 3:47.52 set by Sydney Maree in the first year of the race in 1981. The time is faster than the world record for the distance on the roads, but the course in New York is not record eligible.
USA&rsquo;s Josh Hoey finished as runner-up in 3:48.9, followed by Kenya&rsquo;s Amon Kemboi in 3:49.3, those times also being among the top 10 in race history.
Schweizer won the women&rsquo;s race in 4:14.8, tying Laura Muir&rsquo;s event record from 2022.&nbsp;
Kenya&rsquo;s Dorcas Ewoi was second in 4:17.3 and her compatriot Susan Ejore was third in 4:18.3.

<h2>Chepkorir and Kitiyo win Prague 10km</h2>
Kenya&rsquo;s Diana Chepkorir and&nbsp;Dennis Kibet Kitiyo claimed wins in contrasting styles at the Birell 10K Race, a World Athletics Elite Label road race, in Prague on Saturday (7).

Kitiyo kicked away from his rivals in the closing stages to win the men&rsquo;s race in 27:17, while Chepkorir solo ran her way to victory in the women&rsquo;s race, clocking 30:12.
They each led a Kenyan top two, as Kitiyo was followed by Vincent Kibet Langat (27:25) and Chepkorir by Miriam Chebet (31:28).
Ethiopia&rsquo;s Tadese Worku had taken control of the men&rsquo;s race after the pacemaker stepped aside after around 10 minutes of running, and both Worku and Kitiyo formed part of a breakaway group of four by the halfway point, which was passed in 13:29.
Kitiyo saved enough for a final surge and managed to create a gap on his rivals, eventually winning by eight seconds. Worku was third in 27:32 and Rodrigue Kwizera of Burundi fourth in 27:39.
Chepkorir led the women&rsquo;s race from gun to tape. She had a lead of 36 seconds by 5km, which she reached in 14:43, and powered on to win by 76 seconds.
Ethiopia&rsquo;s Lemlem Nibret followed Chepkorir and Chebet to claim third place in 32:20, while Britain&rsquo;s Samantha Harrison was fourth in 32:47.

<h2>Great North Run titles for&nbsp;Ngugi-Cooper and Kipchumba</h2>
It was a similar story at the Great North Run at a wet Tyneside on Sunday (8), with contrasting half marathon wins secured by Kenya's Mary Ngugi-Cooper and Abel Kipchumba. The women produced a thrilling mass finish at the World Athletics Label road race, but from the start there was only one man in it.
Six women dominated from start to finish: Kenya&rsquo;s Ngugi-Cooper, Sheila Chepkirui and Vivian Cheruiyot, plus Ethiopia&rsquo;s Senbere Teferi and Megertu Alemu and Britain&rsquo;s Eilish McColgan, whose mother Liz won this race when it was the World Championships in 1992.&nbsp;
Ngugi-Cooper and Chepkirui led from Teferi and Alemu, with former winner Cheruiyot and McColgan forming the lead pack across the Tyne Bridge and through the first mile in 5:05. The sextet maintained that pace for the entire race, passing 5km in 16:03, 10km in 32:20 and 15km in 48:20. All looked comfortable as they swung downhill on to the coast road and the final mile.
The experienced Cheruiyot, who is now 40, moved up, but then was the first to drop when the others responded. Five were in contention with 200m to go, then it turned into a fight between Ngugi-Cooper and the Ethiopian pairing. The win went to the 35-year-old Kenyan, who as Mary Wacera was world half marathon runner-up a decade ago.
&ldquo;It was mentally tough because everyone was there,&rdquo; she said, referring to the pack. Ngugi-Cooper has strong British connections. Her coach is Steve Cram, she has a British husband, Chris Cooper, and spends a lot of the year in Leeds. &ldquo;I guess that helped,&rdquo; she joked, referring to the wet conditions.
While Ngugi-Cooper had company for 13.1 miles, Kipchumba was alone, apart from his watch which he checked at the mile and 5km points, so clearly signposted on the route from Newcastle to South Shields. He would have known that he passed 5km in a snappy 13:37.
The Kenyan, who only arrived in town on Saturday due to a two-day visa delay, pulled clear in the third mile with Sondre Nordstad Moen giving chase. At 10km, Kipchumba was 25 seconds up (28:01 vs 28:26), but both Moen and 2021 winner Marc Scott (28:51) weren&rsquo;t losing too much more ground. That picture was only temporary as Kipchumba surged again past halfway. After that, the most significant development was that Scott caught Moen in the 12th mile.
Up front, Kipchumba looked more like a middle-distance runner with the finish in sight, and clearly knew that a sub-one hour was in prospect. He covered the last 176m from 13 miles in 24 seconds to clock 59:52.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I decided to move early, and then I maintained,&rdquo; he reflected, summing up the race in a sentence.

Britain’s Josh Kerr broke the men’s race record while USA’s Karissa Schweizer equalled the women’s to win at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile

Kerr breaks long-standing race record to win 5th Avenue Mile

Ryan Crouser knew that a big throw was coming. Competing at the Ivan Ivancic Memorial on the eve of the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb on Saturday (7), the shot put star twice improved the meeting record and set a season&rsquo;s best of 22.93m to triumph at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.
The following day, at the city&rsquo;s Sports Park Mladost, another seven meeting records were set, including a 2:13.13 1000m by Olympic silver medallist Marco Arop, a 3000m steeplechase performance of 8:06.33 by Leonard Bett and a 3:58.33 1500m by Sintayehu Vissa.
Five weeks on from claiming an unprecedented third consecutive Olympic men&rsquo;s shot put title in Paris, Crouser threw 22.90m to match the mark he achieved to get that gold and then went even farther, improving by another three centimetres in the final round to secure success in front of the Zagreb Fountains in style.
In a contest of impressive depth, his US compatriot Payton Otterdahl was second with an outdoor PB of 22.46m, while Olympic bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell improved his Jamaican record to 22.31m to place third and Italy&rsquo;s world silver medallist Leonardo Fabbri threw 22.24m for fourth. In only two other men's shot put competitions in history has the fourth-place mark been farther.
Crouser had explained ahead of the competition that it still felt like early season to him, due to the series of injury struggles that delayed his opener. Pleased with his consistency since Paris &ndash; as he threw 22.12m in Silesia, 22.49m in Rome and 22.66m in Zurich &ndash; he knew he was in good form.
"It was a fantastic competition. I always love coming to Zagreb and I think that this one topped the list," said Crouser. "Not just on performance, but the atmosphere and the energy tonight. You can see it with all the athletes &ndash; 22.24m didn't even make the podium, that's a crazy result. I am glad that everyone performed that well here.
"My first round throw of 22.36m usually is enough for the win, especially that late in the season. It helped having those guys to push me to farther distances. I am still on less than 10 competitions this year, so it still feels like I am finding my shape."
<h2>Arop, Vissa and Bett light up the track</h2>
On Sunday (8), some four weeks after becoming an Olympic silver medallist, Canada&rsquo;s Arop had refocused on records and had the global 1000m mark in his sights. While Noah Ngeny&rsquo;s 25-year-old world record of 2:11.96 survived another day, Arop did achieve one of the fastest times in history as he ran a North American record of 2:13.13 to set one of the seven meeting records of the day.

The performance puts him fifth on the world all-time list and saw him win by more than two seconds, with USA&rsquo;s Jonah Koech claiming the runner-up spot in a PB of 2:15.15.
On a warm evening in the Croatian capital, the pacemakers reached 400m in 51.72, but Arop decided to sit back off the tempo. As the pacemaker stepped aside, Arop took control and hit 800m in 1:43.94.
The man who set a North American record of 1:41.20 to secure his Olympic 800m silver in Paris had a big final 200m ahead. With the clock ticking closer to 2:11, he powered down the home straight and crossed the finish line a couple of seconds later.
&ldquo;I felt good,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I think to beat the world record I need to be more aggressive early on, but there was just too much room to make up for. Overall it was a big season with a personal best, an Olympic medal and a lot of Diamond League wins. In Brussels (Diamond League final) I would like to go after the world record (in the 800m), but the conditions have to be ideal.&rdquo;
Kenya&rsquo;s Bett couldn&rsquo;t hide his delight at smashing the meeting record in the 3000m steeplechase. The 23-year-old, who finished fourth at the World Championships last year, hadn&rsquo;t raced since July as he continues his return after injury, but he made a comeback in style, running a PB of 8:06.33 to make him the sixth fastest men&rsquo;s 3000m steeplechaser this year.
He was followed by Olympic finalists Ahmed Jaziri of Tunisia and Morocco&rsquo;s Mohamed Tindouft, who respectively ran 8:08:11 and 8:11.56.
There was a similar celebration at the end of the women&rsquo;s 1500m by Italy&rsquo;s Vissa, who threw her arms in the air on reaching the line, with a sub-four-minute finish in her sights. The top three all broke the previous meeting record and dipped under 4:00, with Vissa running&nbsp;3:58.33, Britain's Katie Snowden clocking 3:59.39 and Australia&rsquo;s Linden Hall 3:59.72.

Kenya&rsquo;s Nelly Chepchirchir kicked to a meeting record in the women&rsquo;s 800m, running a PB of 1:57.00 to hold off Jamaica&rsquo;s Natoya Goule-Toppin. Goule-Toppin had been to the fore as the pacemaker stepped aside at 400m, reached in 56.31 on meeting record pace. But Chepchirchir strode ahead on the final bend and although Goule-Toppin tried to respond down the home straight, she couldn&rsquo;t match her rival&rsquo;s finishing strength and finished second in 1:57.43. The top four all went sub 1:58, as Ethiopia&rsquo;s Nigist Getachew was third in a PB of 1:57.47 and USA&rsquo;s Sage Hurta-Klecker fourth in a PB of 1:57.53.
Belgium&rsquo;s Isaac Kimeli ran away with the 2000m, running a PB and meeting record of 4:54.29 to win by more than a second. He led the top seven under 4:57 and was chased home by USA&rsquo;s Cooper Teare and John Reniewicki, who respectively ran PBs of 4:55.42 and 4:55.54.
Another meeting record fell in the women&rsquo;s 400m, as Jamaica&rsquo;s Stacey-Ann Williams went out hard and held on, also improving her PB with a 50.00 run. The Olympic and world relay medallist was clearly ahead off the final bend and while Norway&rsquo;s Henriette Jaeger used a strong finish to close the gap, she couldn&rsquo;t quite catch Williams and claimed the runner-up spot in 50.22. Holding on for third was USA's world 400m hurdles silver medallist Shamier Little in 50.58.

USA&rsquo;s Courtney Lindsey dipped under 10 seconds to take the men&rsquo;s 100m win, clocking a season&rsquo;s best of 9.97 (-0.2m/s) to deny Kenya&rsquo;s Ferdinand Omanyala, who finished 0.05 back. Britain&rsquo;s Romell Glave, who won an earlier race in 10.13 (-0.6m/s), was third this time in 10.11.
It was a battle between Gina Mariam Bass Bittaye of The Gambia and Jamaica's Shashalee Forbes in the women&rsquo;s 100m and Bass Bittaye had the edge, crossing in 11.13 (-0.7m/s) ahead of Forbes in 11.23. USA's Jenna Prandini was third in 11.30.
USA&rsquo;s Olympic fourth-place finisher Erriyon Knighton broke 20 seconds to win the 200m, clocking 19.93 (-0.6m/s) ahead of Joseph Fahnbulleh and Lindsey, who had both already run the 100m. Roko Farkas, the decathlete who recently won the long jump title at the World U20 Championships in Lima, delighted home fans with his 20.67 Croatian record.
Jamaica&rsquo;s Ackera Nugent continued her winning ways in the 100m hurdles after victories in Rome and Silesia, the world fifth-place finisher cruising over the finish in 12.55 (-0.5m/s). Britain&rsquo;s Cindy Sember started well and held on for second in 12.67, while USA&rsquo;s Kendra Harrison was third in 12.76. Japan&rsquo;s Yumi Tanaka won the B race in 12.97 (-0.8m/s).
The 110m hurdles was a real battle for the line and Japan&rsquo;s Rachid Muratake, the fifth-place finisher at the Olympics in Paris, got there first to beat two global medallists. Dipping in 13.14 (-0.5m/s), he denied USA&rsquo;s Olympic silver medallist Daniel Roberts by 0.04, with Jamaica's Tokyo Olympic champion Hansle Parchment following them in third in 13.25.
<h2>Karalis carries fine form to Zagreb</h2>
Olympic pole vault bronze medallist Emmanouil Karalis cleared six metres for the first time at the Diamond League meeting in Silesia and he had more cause for celebration in Zagreb as he cleared 5.88m to break the meeting record.

He entered the competition at 5.58m, which he cleared first time, and then passed to 5.78m, which he managed on his second try. After passing the next height he needed all three attempts to make it over 5.88m and although he brushed the bar on his third attempt, it stayed up and that was enough to clinch him the win. He went on to have three attempts at 6.01m.
USA&rsquo;s two-time world champion Sam Kendricks was second on 5.78m.
As expected, the women&rsquo;s discus was a battle between USA&rsquo;s two-time Olympic gold medallist Valarie Allman and home favourite Sandra Elkasevic, the Olympic bronze medallist.
Making her 17th appearance at the meeting, Elkasevic closed her campaign with 67.12m &ndash; her best of the evening &ndash; but that wasn&rsquo;t quite enough to remove Allman from top spot. Allman also ended on a high, throwing 67.83m in round six after earlier throws of 67.74m and 67.45m. Jorinde Van Klinken was third with 64.49m.
Serbia&rsquo;s Adriana Vilagos improved the national record of 65.60m she set in Silesia a couple of weeks ago, launching the javelin 65.64m to claim a dominant win. Four of her throws would have been enough to triumph, as she backed up that third-round throw with marks of 64.70m, 64.45m and 63.20m. Czechia&rsquo;s Petra Sicakova was second with 60.91m and home favourite Sara Kolak third with 60.23m.
Ukraine&rsquo;s Olympic bronze medallist Mykhaylo Kokhan turned the tables on Canada&rsquo;s Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg in the men's hammer, throwing a PB of 81.14m to surpass 81 metres for the first time. It was close for second place, Poland&rsquo;s five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek taking it ahead of Katzberg &ndash; 79.10m to 79.04m.
Slovenia&rsquo;s 2022 world champion Kristjan Ceh finished fourth in Paris but won at the Rome Diamond League and he took that form with him to Zagreb. He took top spot with his fourth-round throw of 67.95m, ahead of Lawrence Okoye, Olympic bronze medallist Matthew Denny and Olympic champion Roje Stona.
The long jump events in the city centre on Friday (6) were won by USA&rsquo;s double Olympic bronze medallist Jasmine Moore and Jamaica's Shawn-D Thompson.&nbsp;Moore jumped&nbsp;6.71m in the second round and that clinched her the victory ahead of Romania's Alina Rotaru-Kottmann with 6.56m. The men's contest was decided by countback, to the third-best jump, as Thompson and&nbsp;Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov had identical top two marks of 7.99m and 7.94m. In the end, Thompson was confirmed the winner with his superior third-best jump of 7.90m.

August 2024 marked the start of Running for Clean Air in Lagos. Nigeria&rsquo;s largest city is the second location to host this <a href="https://worldathletics.org/athletics-better-world/air-quality/running-for-clean-air" target="_blank" rel="noopener">initiative</a>, through which World Athletics activates local running communities in addressing urban air pollution.&nbsp;
The National Stadium Surulere hosted the official launch of Running for Clean Air, with more than 100 people attending to support the idea of exercising in clean environments. Local partner organisations came from different sectors, showcasing that multi-stakeholder cooperation is necessary if city-level change is to be achieved.&nbsp;
The local efforts in Lagos are being led by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the owner and organiser of the annual Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, and UrbanBetter, an advocacy platform for healthy urban environments. Additional support comes from the Lagos State Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, and National Institute for Sports.&nbsp;

<h2>Advocating for cleaner air through hyperlocal data&nbsp;</h2>
National Stadium Surulere now hosts an air quality monitor which measures hyperlocal occurrence of air-polluting gases (CO2, CO, NO2, NO, O3), particulate matters (PM10, PM4, PM2.5, PM1), and climate-related data (temperature, humidity, dew point, wind direction, WBGT index). For the benefit of the local community, <a href="https://kunakcloud.com/widgets/wa/wa3.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a widget</a> has been created so that everyone can see the current conditions online.
&ldquo;Clean air is an important precondition for runners to have a pleasant experience with our race,&rdquo; says Ebidowei Oweifie, Chief Operating Officer at Nilayo Sports Management Limited. &ldquo;We can&rsquo;t fix it alone, but we hope that our marathon can serve as a platform for all local players to come together and advocate for a healthier environment.&rdquo;&nbsp;
With Nilayo&rsquo;s support, World Athletics will conduct dynamic monitoring during the Access Bank Lagos Marathon on 8 February 2025. This will result in a map of the marathon route that identifies polluted and heat-prone areas. &ldquo;We plan to use this data to inform our decision about future alternations to the marathon route,&rdquo; adds Oweifie.
<h2>Project ambassadors lead the local campaign&nbsp;</h2>
To amplify the campaign&rsquo;s messages, 10 project ambassadors have been selected from the local community of runners. Their role is, among other things, to engage their communities on the topic and to lead monthly training sessions at the National Stadium.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Finding people committed to the cause was one of our priorities before we could even start the project, and I think we were very successful here. We have a group of 10 runners, from a banker to a high school student, from a running beginner to an Olympic gold medallist (Enefiok Udo-Obong), and we rely on them to get the message to as many people as possible," says Waziri Mainasara, Coordinator from UrbanBetter Lagos Cityzens Hub. &nbsp;
Lagos is the second city to host the Running for Clean Air project. It follows Warsaw <a href="https://worldathletics.org/athletics-better-world/news/air-quality-running-clean-air-warsaw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">where the initiative was launched in March 2024</a>.&nbsp;

Multiple Olympic rematches and an attack on the men&rsquo;s world 1000m record indicate that the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold season should end on a high at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb.
Three days of action in the Croatian capital kicks off with the long jump events on Friday (6) before the men&rsquo;s shot put on Saturday (7) and the main in-stadium programme on Sunday (8).
The Olympic champions star in four of the throws events in Zagreb and among the rematches is the shot put, in which five of the top six from the Paris Games are entered in a contest at the Zagreb Fountains, while two-time Olympic gold medallist Valarie Allman will renew her rivalry with home favourite and Olympic bronze medallist Sandra Elkasevic in the women&rsquo;s discus. Roje Stona goes in the men's discus, and Ethan Katzberg in the men's hammer.
On the track at the city&rsquo;s Sports Park Mladost on Sunday, Canada&rsquo;s world 800m champion Marco Arop will take a step up to target the world 1000m record. The 25-year-old currently sits fourth on the world all-time list for his specialism, having run a North American 800m record of 1:41.20 to secure Olympic silver in Paris. Now he aims to improve his 1000m PB of 2:14.35 set in Monaco in 2022, to challenge the world record of 2:11.96 set by Kenya&rsquo;s Noah Ngeny in Rieti in 1999.

&ldquo;After some great 800m races, I will be running 1000m at the meeting in Zagreb, and I want to break the world record in the event,&rdquo; he told organisers. &ldquo;After that, I am heading to Brussels to break the 800m world record as well. The record is definitely going down.&rdquo;
Speaking at the pre-event press conference, he added: "This will be my second world record attempt of the year, the first was an indoor 1000m. I know I'm in great shape. I wasn&rsquo;t expecting the crazy fast times in Lausanne and Silesia, so I&rsquo;m really excited to take advantage of this fitness."
Arop has dipped under 1:42 for 800m three times this season, including 1:41.72 in Lausanne and 1:41.86 in Silesia, and he ran 2:14.74 for 1000m indoors in February, putting him at No.2 all time indoors. Joining him in action will be Olympic 1500m finalist Stefan Nillessen.
USA&rsquo;s Cooper Teare, Belgium&rsquo;s Isaac Kimeli and Kenya&rsquo;s Daniel Munguti feature in the field for the men&rsquo;s 2000m, while Kenya&rsquo;s world fourth-place finisher Leonard Bett races the 3000m steeplechase against Olympic finalists Ahmed Jaziri of Tunisia and Morocco&rsquo;s Mohamed Tindouft.
Australia&rsquo;s Linden Hall, who has run 3:56.40 this season, lines up in the women&rsquo;s 1500m alongside Ethiopia's Axumawit Embaye and Habitam Alemu, plus Britain's Katie Snowden and Italy&rsquo;s Sintayehu Vissa. In the women&rsquo;s 800m, Jamaica&rsquo;s Natoya Goule-Toppin races Kenya&rsquo;s Nelly Chepchirchir and USA&rsquo;s Sage Hurta-Klecker.
<h2>Titans at the fountains</h2>
World record-holder Ryan Crouser heads the shot put clash on the eve of the main meeting, for the Ivan Ivancic Memorial held at the Zagreb Fountains.
USA&rsquo;s Crouser claimed a third consecutive Olympic gold in Paris and he is joined in Zagreb by bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell of Jamaica. In fact, five of the top six from Paris are all entered, as the two medallists are joined by Payton Otterdahl, Leonardo Fabbri and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi. Crouser returns on the hunt for a sixth shot put victory in Zagreb, where he set the meeting record of 22.84m in 2021. Since winning that unprecedented third consecutive Olympic men&rsquo;s shot put title despite a series of injury struggles this year, he has won at the Diamond League meetings in Rome and Zurich, and finished second in Silesia.
"I feel good," said Crouser. "I was very happy with the last meet (Zurich). I was actually surprised a little bit, given the conditions, to throw 22.66m in rainy conditions, plus another 22.50m and a 22.30m. Coming off of Rome, as well, I&rsquo;ve been very consistent. Any time I get consistent, I know that a big throw is possible, so it has me excited.
"It has been a bit of a different season for me &ndash; missing the first half with injury, I feel like I am in a better place than I normally would be because I&rsquo;m more engaged and it still feels like it&rsquo;s early in the season, although it is late. For me, I&rsquo;m more engaged, and I&rsquo;m happy with where I&rsquo;m at physically."

Another throws highlight is the women&rsquo;s discus, which will see Olympic gold and bronze medallists Allman of USA and Elkasevic of Croatia compete again, against their fellow Olympic finalists Vanessa Kamga and Daisy Osakue.
"The dearest meeting of the season is always the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial and this is why I had a break after the Olympics and I prepared for this competition," said&nbsp;Elkasevic, making her&nbsp;17th appearance at the meeting since her first in 2006. "I feel great and as you could see, three days ago I threw a season&rsquo;s best. It will be a great competition."
She is on the hunt for her 12th&nbsp;Boris Hanzekovic Memorial win, but will face a strong challenge from Allman.
"Zagreb really is a competition that showcases our event," said Allman. "I know that if I come to this meeting, I need to be in great form."
The Olympic champion is also in action in the men&rsquo;s event, as Jamaica&rsquo;s Stona &ndash; who is coached by shot put star Crouser &ndash; faces bronze medallist Matthew Denny and 2022 world champion Kristjan Ceh, who finished fourth in Paris but won at the Rome Diamond League a week ago ahead of Stona, with Denny finishing fourth.
The men&rsquo;s hammer returns to the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial for the first time in 11 years. Canada&rsquo;s Katzberg threw 84.12m to add the Olympic title to the world gold he claimed in Budapest last year and become, at the age of 22, the youngest men&rsquo;s world and Olympic hammer champion. The meeting record stands at 81.77m, set by 2008 Olympic champion Primoz Kozmus.
Katzberg will compete against Ukraine&rsquo;s Olympic bronze medallist Mykhaylo Kokhan and Poland&rsquo;s five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek.
"This is my first time having competitions after a major games or championships, so it&rsquo;s a bit of a new experience but I think my coach and I handled it well," said Katzberg. "I am getting my energy back now, finally, and I&rsquo;m feeling good.
"The meet record is definitely something I&rsquo;ll strive for, to try to end the season on a good note."
Olympic silver medallist Jo-Ane van Dyk of South Africa heads the women&rsquo;s javelin entries, along with Croatia&rsquo;s fourth-place finisher in Paris, Sara Kolak, who won the 2016 Olympic title. Two Olympic medallists feature in the men&rsquo;s pole vault, as silver medallist and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks renews his rivalry with bronze medallist Emmanouil Karalis.
USA&rsquo;s double Olympic bronze medallist Jasmine Moore tops the women&rsquo;s long jump field and she&rsquo;s joined by Shanieka Ricketts, who got triple jump silver ahead of Moore in Paris, as well as the recently crowned world U20 heptathlon champion Jana Koscak. Home stars Filip Pravdica and world U20 winner Roko Farkas will be among those fighting for the title in the men&rsquo;s event during the street competition.
<h2>Sprint showdowns</h2>
After securing Olympic 100m hurdles silver in front of a home crowd in Paris, Cyrena Samba-Mayela goes on the hunt for victory as she forms part of a field that also features Jamaica&rsquo;s Ackera Nugent, who won in Rome and Silesia, and USA's Kendra Harrison.

The 110m hurdles&nbsp;Boris Hanzekovic memorial race includes Freddie Crittenden and Daniel Roberts, who respectively ran PBs of 12.93 and 12.96 at the US Olympic trials, plus Jamaica's Tokyo Olympic champion Hansle Parchment.
Gina Mariam Bass Bittaye of The Gambia goes in the women&rsquo;s 100m against Jamaica's Shashalee Forbes and USA's Jenna Prandini, while the men&rsquo;s 100m includes USA&rsquo;s Courtney Lindsey, Brandon Hicklin and Kyree King, plus Kenya&rsquo;s Ferdinand Omanyala.
The men&rsquo;s 200m features three men who have dipped under 20 seconds this season &ndash; USA&rsquo;s Olympic fourth-place finisher Erriyon Knighton,&nbsp;Lindsey and King &ndash; plus Liberia&rsquo;s Olympic finalist Joseph Fahnbulleh, the 2022 winner in Zagreb. Like King and&nbsp;Lindsey,&nbsp;Fahnbulleh is doubling up and also runs the 100m.
Two athletes who have gone sub-50 seconds this season clash in the women&rsquo;s 400m, as two-time world bronze medallist Sada Williams of Barbados races Norway&rsquo;s Henriette Jaeger, plus USA's world 400m hurdles silver medallist Shamier Little and Jamaica's Stacey Ann Williams.

World Athletics is shocked and deeply saddened to learn that Ugandan distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei died tragically on Thursday (5 September) as a result of an alleged domestic abuse attack.
Over the past 15 years, the 33-year-old had represented her nation at major championships on the track, roads, cross country and mountains. Her most notable achievement was her victory in the up and downhill race at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in 2022.
A talented teenager, Cheptegei represented Uganda at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, where she placed 15th individually and earned bronze in the team competition.
She competed in the senior race at the following year&rsquo;s edition in Punta Umbria, and went on to represent Uganda on the track at the World Military Games later that year.
She made her third World Cross Country Championships appearance in 2013 and competed at the African Cross Country Championships in 2014.
After making her marathon debut in 2021, she set a Ugandan record of 2:22:47 in 2022 in what was just her fourth race at the distance. That came just six weeks after her victory at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai.
Last year she finished 14th in the marathon at the World Championships in Budapest. She finished just outside of the medals in the half marathon at the African Games earlier this year, then went on to make her Olympic debut in Paris, placing 44th in the marathon in 2:32:14.
&ldquo;Our sport has lost a talented athlete in the most tragic and unthinkable circumstances,&rdquo; said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. &ldquo;Rebecca was an incredibly versatile runner who still had lots left to give on the roads, mountains and cross country trails.
&ldquo;I have been in touch with our Council Members in Africa to see how we can help not only in our capacity as governing body of the sport Rebecca competed in, but to assess how our safeguarding policies might be enhanced to include abuse outside of the sport, and bringing together stakeholders from all areas of athletics to combine forces to protect our female athletes to the best of our abilities from abuse of all kinds.&rdquo;

Cheptegei, 2022 world mountain running champion, dies tragically

St Lucia's Julien Alfred, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Botswana's Letsile Tebogo are among the Olympic champions in Diamond League action this week, as the world's best athletes descend on Zurich for the last chance to earn points and qualify for the series final in Brussels next week.&nbsp;
The Diamond League action will start on Wednesday evening with the women's pole vault at Zurich Central Station, before the main programme at the Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday evening.&nbsp;
Thursday's action will start at 18:30 local time (GMT+2) with the women's high jump and the main two-hour broadcast window will begin at 20:00 local time with the men's 400m hurdles.
The pole vault city event will start at 17:30 local time (GMT+2) on Wednesday and will be livestreamed in various territories on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@diamondleague/streams" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wanda Diamond League YouTube page</a>.
