As is traditional, distance events were the focus of the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California, which concluded on Saturday night (2).

South African Dominique Scott was an impressive winner of the women’s 5000m in 15:25.10, taking seven seconds off her previous best but just falling short of the Olympic A-standard. Scott finished ahead of Ireland's Mary Cullen, who ran 15:26.53. Olympian Kim Smith of New Zealand ran 15:32.77 for third place in her first race after an extended time away from racing.

In the men’s 5000m, Paul Chelimo ran a 56-second final lap to finish in 13:36.63. Andrew Butchart took second in 13:37.95 and Ross Millington rounded out the top three and crossed the line in 13:38.43.

The women’s 10,000m saw eight women finish under the Olympic standard of 32:15.00. Laura Thweatt led the pack, running a personal best of 31:52.94. Aliphine Bolton of Kenya finished second in 31:54.20 and American Tara Welling took third in 32:02.80.

The men’s 10,000m didn’t yield as many Olympic qualifiers as only two men broke the standard of 28:00.00.  US-based Kenyan Leonard Korir ran 27:58.65 for the win, just ahead of Shadrack Kipchirchir, who ran 27:58.91. German Fernandez made his much-anticipated 10,000m debut and finished fifth in 28:06.64.

In the spint events, Carl Horsley was the fastest in action, running 10.33 to win the men's 100m. Cam Viney was best in the 400m hurdles, running 50.96.
