Cuba’s Yorgelis Rodriguez, the defending world junior heptathlon champion, did what she needed to do in the long jump, reaching 6.19m in the second round.

As the only athlete to get beyond six metres in the damp conditions that prevailed during the first event of the heptathlon’s second day, Rodriguez made up more than 60 points on the overall leaders, adding 908 to her total.

Celine Leffler of Germany, and Dutch medal hope Nadine Visser were tied for the second-best mark at 5.99m, earning each of them 846 points.

Morgan Lake, the overall leader, was fourth at 5.90m, worth 819 points; the British girl will breathe a sigh of relief after getting through the long jump without any significant problems. Her bid for the gold medal at last year’s IAAF World Youth Championships came to grief after a poor long jump.

Lake, at 4640 points, continues to lead the overall standings after five events, with Visser at 4498 her closest competition.

Rodriguez is now close in third at 4469 and can reasonably expect to close on Lake in the javelin. Leffler is a distant fourth with 4302.
