Piotr Lisek of Poland topped a world-leading 5.92m in the pole vault at the annual Springer Meeting in Cottbus, Germany, on Wednesday (25).
The clearance by the 24-year-old, who finished fourth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games last summer, was also a national record, eclipsing his own Polish indoor standard he set in 2015 by 2cm, which was also his previous career best, indoors or out.
Competing for the second time this indoor season, Lisek clinched the victory at 5.78m, before topping 5.83m with his first attempt and 5.92m on his second. He closed out the competition with three tries at the still-formidable 6.00m mark. Two of the three were solid efforts.
Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany, the 2013 world champion, was second at 5.73m with Kostadinos Filippidis of Greece third at 5.68. Shawn Barber of Canada, the 2015 world champion, was fourth, topping out at 5.60m.
The programme also included a women's high jump, won by Lithuanian record holder Airine Palsyte with a first attempt clearance at 1.95m. She forged on with one effort at 1.98m and two at 2.00m, but none were particularly close. The 24-year-old has a 1.98m lifetime best, set both indoors and outdoors.
Croatia's Ana Simic beat Spain's Olympic champion Ruth Beitia on countback for second as both topped 1.92m.
