John Godina looks to be well on the way towards defending his world title in the men's shot. The powerful American unleashed a put of 20.88 - his seasonal best - in the first round of qualifying.

Godina's prospects for winning another gold got a boost when teammate Kevin Toth, the yearly world leader, fouled twice then had an uninspired 19.35 that left him more than 2m behind his form of earlier in the year.

Five men reached the automatic qualifier of 20.25, Godina being followed by Ukraine's Yuriy Bilonog (20.55), Denmark's Joachim Olsen (20.45), Spain's Manuel Martínez (10.36) and Australia's Justin Anlezark (20.25). They'll be joined in the final by Tepa Reinikainen and Arsi Harju of Finland and Milan Haborák of Slovakia.
