American Trey Hardee clocked 10.45, the fastest time in the first event of the men’s Decathlon, 100 Metres.
The 25-year-old Hardee scored 987 points for this result which is also a season’s best. Another American Ashton Eaton ran 10.53, but the real news from the first event was Cuban Yordani Garcia setting a big personal best 10.60 being the third fastest of the field.
The 20-year-old García is one the medal favourites and lowered his earlier 10.64 best from the Beijing Olympics by 0.04 seconds. Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine ran 10.63 with another Cuban Yunior Diaz clocking a 10.66 personal best and Larbi Bouraada of Algeria 10.68, also a personal best.
Gold medal favourite Leonel Suárez, also from Cuba, fell a bit back of his best results in the first event starting his Decathlon with a 11.13 result. Defending champion Czech Roman Sebrle clocked 11.16 which means he will not be able to defend his title here. Belarussian Andrei Krauchanka started with 11.18 and Osaka 2007 silver medallist, Jamaican Maurice Smith, is also out as he stopped running in the 100 Metres just about 30 metres into the race.
