Since the IAAF World Championships Paris 2003, the IAAF and the International Fair Play Committee have joined forces to present a Special Fair Play award to a Track and Field athlete for his or her outstanding achievement booth on and off the track.
Previous recipients of this award have been: Jonathan Edwards in 2003, Frankie Fredericks and Heike Drechsler in 2005, Mike Powell in 2007, Lars Riedel in 2009 and Koji Murofushi in 2011
This year the IAAF and CIFP are honoured to present this Special Fair Play Award to Igor Ter-Ovanesyan on Saturday.
Ter-Ovanesyan broke the World Long Jump record on two occasions, was a two-time Olympic Games bronze medallist and three-time European champion, and competed internationally for the Soviet Union across three decade from the 1950s through to the 1970s
During this period, he became renowned for his friendship towards American athletes, and other competitors from across the world, showing the power of sport to transcend political differences.
Unusually for a European at this time, and especially for a Soviet athlete, he competed in the US Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning in 1963 and 1965
After his competitive career came to an end, he continued his involvement with athletics as a coach and administrator, including spending several years as a member of the IAAF Council.
The award was presented by Mr. Lamine Diack, IAAF President and Dr. Jeno Kamuti, President of the International Fair Play Committee.
The International Fair Play Committee was established in 1963 by UNESCO, and is a recognized organization of the IOC.

Igor Ter-Ovanesyan honoré par un Trophée spécial du Fair Play
Depuis les Championnats du Monde de l'IAAF de Paris 2003, l'IAAF et le Comité international pour le Fair Play (CIFP) s'allient pour remettre un Trophée spécial du Fair Play à un athlète en reconnaissance de ses performances d'exception, tant dans les stades qu'en dehors.
Depuis son introduction, ce trophée a déjà été attribué aux sportifs suivants: Jonathan Edwards (2003), Frankie Fredericks et Heike Drechsler (2005), Mike Powell (2007), Lars Riedel (2009) et Koji Murofushi (2011).
Cette année l'IAAF et le CIFP ont l'honneur de remettre, ce samedi, le Trophée spécial du Fair Play à Igor Ter-Ovanesyan.
Ter-Ovanesyan a battu le record du monde du saut en longueur à deux occasions, remporté deux médailles de bronze olympiques et a été trois fois champion européen, représentant l'Union Soviétique pendant trois décennies, depuis les années 50 jusque dans les années 70.
Au cours de cette période, il était réputé pour l'amitié qu'il ne manquait jamais de témoigner envers les athlètes des autres nations, tant américains que des autres pays, démontrant ainsi les capacités du sport à transcender les clivages politiques.
Il a notamment participé aux Championnats des États-Unis en salle – ce qui était très inhabituel pour un athlète européen (et a fortiori soviétique) à cette époque - remportant même le titre en 1963 et 1965.
Au terme de sa carrière compétitive il est resté impliqué dans l'athlétisme en qualité d'entraîneur et d'administrateur, siégeant notamment plusieurs années au Conseil de l'IAAF.
Le trophée a été remis conjointement par M Lamine Diack, Président de l'IAAF, et le docteur Jeno Kamuti, Président du Comité international pour le Fair Play.
Le Comité international pour le Fair Play, fondé en 1963 par l'UNESCO, est un organisme reconnu par le CIO.
