Javelin legend Jan Zelezny won on Friday evening again, as last year, the title of the Czech Sportsman of the year. The big success of athletics in Czech Republic was confirmed by 2nd place of decathlon world record holder Roman Sebrle and 3rd place of decathlon world champion Tomas Dvorak.
Only 4th one of the best ice-hockey players Jaromir Jagr of the Washington Capitals. This was the fourth time that Zelezny won this trophy equalling the record number of wins of gymnast Vera Caslavska (who during the evening received the Zatopek award for the legend of Czech sports, but was not present). The vote was made by 224 Czech sports journalists. The special evening was broadcasted live by Czech Television.
"It was really one of my best years. Everything went as I wanted. The only thing more I could have wished for would have been a better result. But this remains a goal for next year, and of course the European title, because I do not have it yet. But even if I will not win, it is not dramatic, that is my philosophy," said Zelezny who performed twice during the evening as a singer together with Sebrle. They were received well by the public, but said afterwards, that it was enough. Both will start the usual winter training camp in Potchefstroom, South Africa on January 11.
