| The first semi-final had a slow pace for the first 400 with a final time of 59.18 and the second lap was run in a similar time. Maria Mutola (MOZ) was the only athlete to run under two minutes (1:59.84), followed by Jearl Miles-Clark (USA) and Natalya Tsyganova (RUS). The second semi-final was not much faster. However, the first 400 was covered in a fast, 59.14 seconds as the competitors were keen to set the necessary pace as they knew what was needed to reach the final. Both qualifying times were reached in this heat because of its last lap speed. The Russian Masterkova was the winner with 1:59.25. Only four athletes among a field of sixteen clocked inside two minutes. The biggest surprise was the elimination of Great Britain's Kelly Holmes. |

La primera semifinal tuvo un paso lento por el 400 con un
tiempo de 59.18, con un segundo cuatrocientos corrido a igual ritmo siendo la mozambiquena
Maria Mutola la unica en bajar de dos minutos (1:59.84), secundada en la carrera por Jearl
Miles-Clark (USA) y Natalya Tsyganova (RUS). La segunda semifinal fue igual de lenta que
la primera. El tiempo de paso por el 400 fue de 59.14 s., ya que las competidoras conocian
el ritmo necesario para clasificarse al ser la ultima semifinal. Los dos tiempos de
repesca fueron logrados en esta ultima ronda, debido a la velocidad de la ultima vuelta.
La rusa Masterkova fue la vencedora con un tiempo de 1:59.25. Solo cuatro atletas de las
dieciseis participantes lograron bajar de dos minutos. La sorpresa fue la eliminacion de
