Women’s Triple Jump
In relatively still conditions the women’s triple jump was won and lost on the first round efforts of the top two triple jumpers
The women’s triple jump was won by Tereza MARINOVA [BUL] on her first jump of the competition when she cleared 14.77m.
MARINOVA, the 2000 Olympic gold medallist finished third at this years World Championships and second at the recent Goodwill Games in Brisbane. Today she turned the tables on her nemesis, World and Goodwill champion Tatyana LEBEDEVA [RUS]. MARINOVA believed she was “ready to jump” today and was not surprised that her best jump was her first.
LEBEDEVA was slightly disappointed with having to accept second position (as she did at the Sydney Olympics) but believes she will continue to improve. Her best leap of 14.61m also came in the first round of the competition.
Third place finisher was Francoise MBANGO ETONE [CMR] the World silver medallist who covered 14.47m in the fifth round to overtake Magdelin MARTINEZ [ITA] who leapt 14.35m in the fourth round.
