| There was an excellent level in both semifinals with the worst time of all participants in 50.93, and half of the runners bettered their personal best. In the first semifinal, the most difficult to forecast, Nigerian Falilat Ogunkoya, leader of the season, won the race breaking the 50 seconds barrier (49.96) in a very tight final with the first three inside a margin of 15 hundredths of a second. Jamaican Lorraine, German Anja Rucker, who led the first 200 metres, and Russian Natalya Nazarova, will join the Nigerian in the final. Australian Cathy Freeman, the defending world champion, will fight for the title again, after winning the second semifinal in 49.76, the best mark overall. She performed a fast final 100 metres that put her four decimes ahead of the European champion Grit Breuer, very closely followed by the British Catherine Merry and the Russian Olga Kotlyarova. Nigerian Olabisi Afolabi did not make the final with 50.40. |

Excelente nivel registrado en ambas semifinales en los que
el peor tiempo de todas las participantes fue de 50.93, con la mitad de ellas mejorando
sus marcas personales. En la primera semifinal, la mas abierta a priori, vencio la lider
de la temporada, la nigeriana Falilat Ogunkoya. Bajo de la barrera de los 50 segundos
(49.96) en un final de carrera muy apurado con las tres primeras en un margen de 15
centesimas. La acompanaran en la lucha por las medallas la jamaicana Lorraine Graham, la
alemana Anja Rucker, que encabezo los primeros 200 metros, y la rusa Natalya Nazarova. La
vigente campeona mundial, la australiana Cathy Freeman, volvera a disputar el titulo, al
ganar su semifinal con 49.76, la mejor marca de todas las registradas. Realizo una recta
final muy rapida que le sirvio para aventajar en cuatro decimas a la campeona europea Grit
Breuer, seguida muy de cerca por la britanica Catherine Merry y la rusa Olga Kotlyarova.
La nigeriana Olabisi Afolabi se quedo fuera de la final con 50.40.   |
