19 January 2000 - Moscow – The first world class result of the recently commenced indoor season has been established in Russia at the Open Moscow Championships for under 23 and under 20 year olds, held on Monday and Tuesday this week.

During the second day of competition, 1999 World high jump Champion and World Indoor silver medallist, Vyacheslav Voronin established a new season’s best of 2.33m. The Russian was also 1999 world leader with a personal best of 2.37m.

His series in Moscow was as follows:
2.21/1st attempt
2.25/2nd attempt
2.30/1st attempt
2.33/2nd attempt
2.37/xxx

Voronin had already cleared 2.30m on 29 December in his home town of Vladikavkaz.

Our friend and colleague Sergey Tikhonov, always a reliable source of news from Russia, was the first to point out that the winner of the 200m in the men’s under 20 category (in 22.25) was 19 year old Andrey Yepishin, who is none other than Yekaterina Podkopayeva’s son. 48 year old Yekaterina, was the 1500m bronze medallist at the first ever World Championships in Helsinki in 1983. She went on to win the 1992 World Cup and become double World Indoor Champion over the same distance in Toronto 93 and Paris 97. In 1998 Yekaterina still figured in the World Rankings with a time of 4:05.44.
