Hey everyone, happy New Year!
Greetings from the beautiful Cayman Islands. I couldn't have begun this year on a better note. For the first time in my professional track career I am training in my home country!
Camp Fun officially began this past Monday and we are looking forward to 3 - 4 weeks of hard training in preparations for the indoor season. Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, Obadele Thompson, Brian Lewis, Jason Smoots, Anson Henry and Mushami Robinson also made the trip.
This all came about last December when Marion and Tim had planned to go to Hawaii for some warm weather training before the indoor season began, and I thought why not my island?
I made the suggestion, and everyone agreed that it was an idea worth exploring. There was a direct flight from Charlotte, all the facilities we needed were there, and there were a multitude of activities we could do off the track to keep us entertained!
It certainly helped that Marion had previously been to Cayman for a CIAA fundraiser and had thoroughly enjoyed herself.
It took all of 3 weeks to plan for the trip, but by Christmas day everything had been settled.
What a Christmas present!
It still didn't really hit me until I touched down in Grand Cayman. This would mark the first time in my professional career that I would be training in my home country for an extended period of time!
Finally the Cayman public will get a chance to see the hard work and dedication you have to put in to training to be competitive on a world class level.
While we are here we will be offering clinics for the local kids as well as up and coming track and field athletes, as well as an opportunity for them to see what world-class training is all about.
My coach (Dan Pfaff) will also be offering a coach's clinic for local and international coaches. At the end of our trip, there will be a fundraising farewell dinner hosted by our athletic association.
I will keep you posted on how training is going as the indoor season approaches.
Ciao for now!
