The biggest hopes will be deposited in Race Walker Jefferson Pérez from Ecuador and Long jumper Irving Saladino from Panama.

Pérez, the 2003 World champion, has prepared himself at high altitude in Arequipa, Peru. Two weeks before the South American Championships suffered a knee problem, but still recovered to win in Cali with a season’s best of 1:22:54.4.

Saladino, who has been based in São Paulo since December 2004, was having a wonderful season until he injured his left thigh at his last official competition in Luzern, Switzerland, on 14 June. He hasn’t competed since, but his coach, Brazilian Nélio Moura is confident that Saladino will be ready to go in Helsinki.

Saladino is placed eleventh in the IAAF World Rankings for the Long Jump, and is also seventh at the 2005 World Lists with an 8.29m effort.
